AIA National & Industry News
*New* Project Delivery Study Available: Maximizing Success in Integrated Projects
A message from the AIA State Government Network: I want to share with you the results of a very recent study that was conducted this year by the Charles Pankow Foundation and the Construction Industry Institute. To read the full report, click here. It’s also posted on the State & Local webpage under the Project Delivery tab.
In sum, the scope of the study involved 200 capital facility projects and it concluded that owners will achieve maximum success with their projects when they implement an overall project delivery strategy that involves: (1) early involvement of all of the core project team members (2) a qualifications-driven selection process (3) the use of open book accounting in contracts during the delivery process to encourage transparency and (4) contract terms that appropriately align risks and rewards with financial incentives and shared management responsibilities.
This recommended strategy aligns (and supports) AIA recommendations in the 2012 DB Reform toolkit, minus the accounting and contract strategies, therefore it could be cited to support your work at the state level.
Where you part of the Project Delivery Task Force when they developed the DB Reform toolkit? If so the AIA SGN would like to hear your thoughts on whether it would be worthwhile to reopen that toolkit for modifications that align with this study.
NBI CEO briefs Congressional members on "reinventing" existing buildings
Washington, DC – October 22, 2015 – The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has produced a report assessing the work of firms that are part of the AIA 2030 Commitment, a voluntary initiative to commit their practice to advancing the AIA’s goal of carbon-neutral buildings by the year 2030. “This is a significant step in the right direction that showcases the strides being made by the design and construction community to reduce the energy consumption of buildings,” said AIA EVP/Chief Executive Officer, Robert Ivy, FAIA. “But we are still a long way from achieving our ultimate goal of carbon neutrality. We hope that the progress outlined in this report can generate greater urgency to meet or exceed the outlined carbon reduction targets by architects and their clients.” View the AIA 2030 2014 Progress Report.Strong Rebound for Architecture Billings Index
Washington, D.C. – October 21, 2015 – The Architecture Billings Index (ABI) returned to positive territory after a slight dip in August, and has seen growth in six of the nine months of the year so far. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lead time between architecture billings and construction spending. The AIA reported the September ABI score was 53.7, up from a mark of 49.1 in August. This score reflects an increase in design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index was 61.0, down from a reading of 61.8 the previous month.
“Aside from uneven demand for design services in the Northeast, all regions are project sectors are in good shape,” said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA, PhD. “Areas of concern are shifting to supply issues for the industry, including volatility in building materials costs, a lack of a deep enough talent pool to keep up with demand, as well as a lack of contractors to execute design work.”
