Jan/Feb: Attend State Building Code Meetings: Review of the 2018 IRC & IBC
Meetings are open to anyone interested in participating in the code review.
Due to legislative changes in the 2017 session, the State Building Code Council (SBCC) has been given authority to adopt building codes which do not require the Governor's approval for public hearings nor his signature on the bill enacting the updated codes. For this reason, the SBCC is still following the 2006 International Building Code/International Residential Code (IBC/IRC). The Legislature recently mandated that the SBCC adopt the newest IBC/IRC codes within 2 years from the date of publication. View the 2018 IBC & IRC Significant Changes in Dropbox.
We now have only 3-4 months for the AIA Codes Committee to review and recommend changes appropriate for Hawaii. We have two different code review meetings that will meet weekly.

AIA Advocacy Shapes Tax Reform
The AIA was engaged from the very beginning of the tax reform process to ensure fair treatment for architects and to make their voices heard. This work included providing updates and analysis to AIA components and giving AIA members the opportunity to weigh in with their legislators.
Through this effort, architects were able to shape three important aspects of the bill that would adversely affect the architecture profession or the building industry. Although this bill will impact every American differently, architects spoke up and made their voices heard, securing an outcome which recognizes the importance and influence the profession has in the United States and its economy.
As reported previously, Mickey Jacob, FAIA was asked by advocacy staff in DC to represent the AIA on Capitol Hill to lobby for certain provisions in the Tax Reform debate. Specifically, Congresswoman Kathy Castor (D-FL) who represents Tampa was named a “Conferee” to the Committee negotiating the Tax Bill language between the House and the Senate. Jacob carried the AIA position on both the proposed elimination of the Historic Preservation Tax Credits and to have architects included in the exemptions for increase in Tax on firm revenue for “pass through” companies not incorporated, under which a substantial number of AIA members and member firms fall. Congresswoman Castor favored the AIA position and used information provided in the committee discussions.
The legislative process moved with unusual speed, bringing a bill known as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act to the House and Senate floors for a vote in late December. It was signed into law just before the holidays.
For an in depth look at the bill, please click here.
