2018 Design Symposium, Nov. 13-15, Honolulu
Presented by AIA Honolulu, CSI Hawaii, HAF, AIA Hawaii State Council and the UH School of Architecture.
At the 2018 Design Symposium, some of the most creative architects, landscape architects, planners and design professionals in Hawaii and throughout the Northwest and Pacific Region will explore the theme: Building Voices: Livable Cities & Communities.
BECOME A PRESENTER: The Symposium Committee invites you to submit your workshop or session proposals. The Design Symposium sessions and workshops will be held at the Hawaii Convention Center all day Wednesday, November 14, and the morning of Thursday, November 15. The AIA Honolulu Design Awards is Hawaii’s oldest program of its type, held annually since 1958. Projects submitted by local AIA members will be judged on their merit by a distinguished jury. The Design Awards Gala will take place on Nov. 15 at the historic Bishop Museum.

- USGBC Hawaii Sustainability Award (Optional): For 2018, our Built Projects can also compete for the USGBC Hawaii Sustainability Award. To enter, you need to complete the stated submission requirements in our detailed information.
- Updated Submission Requirements: This year we have also updated our submission requirements for the Project Narrative and Jury Upload (view above link) to match the AIA Northwest Pacific Region Awards. This will make it easier for you to apply for both awards.
2018 Design Awards Jury: We are excited to again welcome an out of state jury, provided to us by AIA Seattle, who will judge our awards, together with the past President of AIA Honolulu.

Join us for a special evening featuring six films by the legendary Charles and Ray Eames, among the twentieth century's most enduringly influential designers and design thinkers.
Moderated and selected by Daniel Freidman, FAIA, Dean and ACSA Distinguished Professor at University of Hawaii, School of Architecture, the films include Design Q & A (1972, 5 min.), IBM at the Fair (1965, 8 min.), Fiberglass Chairs (1970, 9 min.), Goods (1971, 6 min.), and House After Five Years of Living (1955, 11 minutes).
Immediately following the presentation, award-winning architects and School of Architecture faculty members Karla Sierralta and Brian Strawn (Strawn+Sierralta) will offer commentary and questions about the Eamesʻs practice, legacy, and significance in a contemporary context.

AIA National Update
June Architectural Firm Billings Stay Positive
Architecture firm billings slowed in June but remained positive for the ninth consecutive month, according to a new report today from The American Institute of Architects (AIA).
AIA’s Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score for June was 51.3 compared to 52.8 in May, which is positive since any score over 50 represents billings growth. As a result, June’s ABI shows that demand for architecture firm services continues to improve across all sectors.
The Architecture Billings Index (ABI), produced by the AIA Economics & Market Research Group, is a leading economic indicator that provides an approximately nine to twelve month glimpse into the future of nonresidential construction spending activity. Read more.

Submissions for the 2018 Emerging Professionals Exhibit are now being accepted. This is open to any architecture student, recent graduation, or architect licensed fewer than 10 years.

A'19 Call for Proposals, Peer Reviewers, and Workshops
The Call for Presentations, Peer Reviewers, and Workshops for the A'19 Conference on Architecture in Las Vegas opened in June. Individuals interested in presenting should complete the submission form.
Cal for Proposal submissions are due August 1.
