AIA National Updates

Industry Experts Agree Energy Modeling is Key to Reaching Carbon Neutrality in Buildings

AIA data shows current scarcity of design projects meet carbon reduction targets

Washington, D.C. – November 18, 2015 – There has been an increase in the number of design projects, gross square footage and net-zero energy projects that have been reported as part of the American Institute of Architects 2030 Commitment. Those positive steps on the path to reaching carbon neutral buildings by the year 2030 are countered, however, by a small percentage of projects that met the 60 percent carbon reduction target for 2014.   Read the press release.

Architecture Billings Index on Solid Footing

Continued growing demand across all construction sectors

Washington, D.C. – November 18, 2015 – There has been increasing levels of demand for design services for nearly all construction project types for the majority of the year as revealed in the Architecture Billings Index (ABI).  As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lead time between architecture billings and construction spending. The AIA reported the October ABI score was 53.1, down slightly from the mark of 53.7 in the previous month. This score still reflects an increase in design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index was 58.5, down from a reading of 61.0 the previous month. Read press release.

John Hara, FAIA featured in the Pacific Business News

Congratulations to John Hara, FAIA, for being featured in the Pacific Business News on Nov. 13, 2015.  The article was titled "John Hara on architecture" and written by editor in chief A. Kam Napier who met him at his Moiliili office to learn more about how this small firm succeeds in such a big way.

"John Hara’s architectural career is filled with successes, both aesthetic and professional. Some of the landmark buildings he has designed since opening his firm in 1970 include Case Middle School at Punahou School, the first phase of University of Hawaii at West Oahu, the Maui Arts & Cultural Center and the renovation of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel — and those are just a few highlights out of 65 designed and completed institutional commissions."
