Living Building Challenge House with Aaron Ackerman - Living Building Challenge - A Visionary Path to a Restorative Future!
Aaron Ackerman with Bowers + Kubota will present real life solutions relevant to the Hawai'i Region for implementing net-positive building development and the imperatives to the Living Building Challenge. Aaron’s house, named Haleola'ili'ainapono is a demonstration LBC case study built almost entirely out of regional Hawai'i waste stream materials, and is the first residence in the state to treat, recycle and retain 100% of its wastewater where a sewer lateral is present to property. Aaron is currently pursuing certification of his own residence through the International Future Institute's Living Building Challenge Certification Program. In 2017, his home was awarded the Grand Prix of Real Estate Award by the International Real Estate Federation USA Council, granting passage to compete in the international real estate arena. In 2018, his home was awarded the prestigious World Prix d'Excellence Award for Sustainable Development by the International Real Estate Federation in Dubai, UAE. The Hawaii Venture Capital Association and Hawai'i State Senate named Aaron and Bowers + Kubota the 2018 Island Innovator of the Year.

Feb 27: 2019 Mentorship Program + Kick Off Pau Hana
Our local 5x5x5 program has been added to AIA National's Best Practices website and highlights AIA Honolulu as an example for other chapters nationally.
Register Online! Online registration to the Kickoff Pau Hana automatically enrolls you in the program. Registration limited to first 25 participants.

We invite AIA Honolulu members (AIA, Assoc. AIA, Allied Members), Sister Organization Members and Non-Members to participate in a new mentorship program geared toward emerging professionals and their development.
A formal platform and social group for emerging professionals to engage with industry leaders from diverse backgrounds. Five learning groups will engage a new mentor every other month in Pau Hana setting (five meetings total March - November 2019)
2019 Kick-Off Pau Hana! The program begins with a Kick-Off Pau Hana, which will be an informal gathering to introduce the program and allow participants to meet the mentors and their learning groups. All participants are strongly encouraged to attend the kick-off pau hana.
Program Cost: $50 - Includes Pau Hana Kickoff + 5 Group Mentoring Sessions.

AIA Honolulu ARE Study Cohort Starts Next Week!
Attend Bootcamp Feb 19 & Start Practice Management Feb 20
6 Sessions Covers 3 Divisions for One Low Rate
- Feb 19, 5:30pm- RSVP for Free ARE Bootcamp Overview: Come for an overview of the ARE Prep cohort program, expectations, general study tips, and a review of the licensure process.
- Feb 20, 5pm - Register for all 6 Sessions: Connect and review with others preparing for the Architect Registration Exam. Membership provides 6 sessions to cover 3 divisions of the ARE 5.0 exam. A second cohort will cover the remaining 3 exams. Membership also includes access to the Black Spectacles online study videos!
Each session will focus on a specific division with a guest speaker presentation, sample questions, testing tips and open discussions. Snacks and drinks will be provided.

We will be covering ARE 5.0 Practice Management, sample questions and study tips.
Cost: ARE Study Club Membership for 6 sessions is $250 for AIA member / $360 for non-members.

Feb 16: 42nd Sandcastle Esquisse "Architecture and Music"
This year marks the 42nd year of hosting the Sandcastle Esquisse event for the AIAS chapter and a great way to showcase their collective imaginative talents to the community. The event will again be held at Kailua Beach Saturday, Feb. 16, 9am-1pm. The theme is "Architecture and Music" and is open to creative interpretation. Feb 19: Proof of Concept: Public-Public Partnerships at Work
Attend a University of Hawaii Community Design Center (UHCDC) panel presentation and exhibit at the state capitol basement auditorium Tuesday Feb 19, 2019 at 10 am. They have gathered UHCDC project teams and agency representatives to present their work and to reflect on ways in which they can better serve the state and our collective communities. As a teaching-practice and service-learning initiative of the School of Architecture, they invite professionals to learn more, work with them, and to provide critical feedback on how they can better support the requirements of the profession. Feb 28: AIA Firms Reserve a Spot at the AIAS Career Fair
AIAS Annual Career Fair will be held Thursday, Feb. 28, 11am-3pm at the UH School of Architecture Courtyard. There is a small registration fee of $50 (+ $20 for presentation space).
