    2019 AIA Grassroots Update

Hawaii Delegation (L-R): Joe Ferraro FAIA, Brent Tokita, AIA; Purnima McCutcheon, AIA; Jason DeMarco, AIA and Tom Cannon, AIA (AIA Maui).

Reported by Jason DeMarco, AIA, AIA Hawaii State Council Director & Scholarship Recipient

I was able to attend the 2019 AIA Grassroots conference in Washington DC using a scholarship from the AIA Northwest Pacific Region and AIA Hawaii State Council.  This scholarship is available each year to attend Grassroots and preference is given to more remote locations, such as Hawaii and Guam.  The AIA HSC also assisted by subsidizing expenses that were not fully covered by the regional scholarship.

A key event of the annual AIA Grassroots conference, attended by your Hawaii delegation, was Capitol Hill Day when we visited the offices and met with senior staff of each of our Hawaii legislators:  Senator Schatz and Hirono and Representatives Case and Gabbard.

We shared with their offices two key advocacy issues AIA is pursuing:  Revising the federal tax code to incentivize energy efficiency renovations in existing buildings and the valuable role Architects can play in addressing school safety.

Energy Efficiency: Change in the Current Tax Code Section 179D which has expired to reinstate it, and allow for greater participation for commercial building renovations inclusion of energy saving systems such as solar, energy star equipment, high efficiency HVAC systems. Current Tax deduction is $1.80 per SF.

School Safety: Support for safe school design for new and existing schools that keep them positive learning environments. We asked that congress make design services eligible for existing federal grant funding and that the government establish a clearing house of resources on school design best practices.

These great meetings were followed-up with a congressional reception at the Library of Congress where we could interact with members and staff outside their offices.

Following these advocacy events on subsequent days, we heard from the leadership of AIA and attended training workshops.  Two highlights were a Mayors’ panel discussion on how Mayors and Architects can work closely together to address the myriad of issues facing each of our communities and a keynote address by Doris Goodwin, presidential historian and author, on her new book: Leadership in Turbulent Times.

Grassroots was a very inspiring and informational event and I would encourage any AIA member interested in advocacy to contact AIA HSC to inquire about this and other available scholarships.

Joe Ferraro, FAIA, 2019 AIA Honolulu President also would like to add:

During the AIA Northwest Pacific Region meeting we met the new EVP Danielle Hurd, discussed need for component cross communication with newsletters; new regional reps needed for 2020-2022 and the Regional Leadership Summit in Bozeman, MT Sept 19-20.

    AIA National Update

    February ABI Score Shows Softening

The Architecture Billings Index (ABI) from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) demonstrated a softened, but positive score during the month of February. The overall score fell from 55.3 in January to 50.3 in February, flirting with a dip into negative terrain for the first time in more than a year.

“Overall business conditions at architecture firms across the country have remained generally healthy,” said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA. “Firms in the south recorded continued strong design activity, likely reflecting a healthy regional economy and ongoing rebuilding from the catastrophic 2018 hurricane season.”

The project inquiries index saw a marginal increase of its high score from January, growing from 59.6 to 59.8 last month. Regional averages and the sector index breakdown also maintained positive scores.
