Bill Update & Committee Hearing

Jul 25: Bill 25 (2019), Energy Code Update, Committee Hearing at 9am

The Caldwell Administration’s proposed energy code update ordinance –  Bill 25 (2019) – is scheduled to be heard Thursday, July 25, 9am in the Zoning, Planning and Housing Committee (ZPH) at Honolulu Hale. By reducing carbon pollution, alleviating energy burden, and supporting long-term affordability for working families and residents, adoption of the ordinance with the EV Readiness and Renewable Hot Water provisions is directly aligned with the Administration’s overall sustainability and resilience priorities as well as the recently released Oʻahu Resilience Strategy. View bill summary along with an economic analysis of hot water heating technologies.

If you are interested in weighing in for this more substantive committee review, you can submit written testimony again here. You can view the full meeting agenda here.  If possible, written testimony should be submitted by 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24 (24 hours in advance of the hearing). Of course, you can also testify in-person at the committee meeting itself.

Design Services Demand Stalled in June

Project inquiry gains hit a 10-year low.  Demand for design services at architecture firms decreased in June in comparison to the previous month, according to a new report today from the AIA.

AIA’s Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score for June was 49.1, which is down from 50.2 in May. Any score below 50 indicates a decrease in billings. Both the project inquiries index and the design contracts index continued to soften in June but remained positive.  Read the full AIA National press release

The AIA Denounces Conditions at Detention Centers

The below statement is posted on the AIA website and was shared with the press. It does not address immigration policy, but focuses on the misuse of the built environment, and the clear ethical and professional guidelines of the AIA.

The AIA urges local, state, and federal leaders to work together to safeguard the dignity, safety, and welfare of everyone regardless of race, creed, gender, age or national origin in their custody and care at detention facilities.  AIA’s members are driven, as so clearly stated in our Code of Ethics, to “uphold human rights in all their professional endeavors.” Fundamentally, AIA’s vision is that the built environment promotes and preserves the health, safety, and welfare of every individual, and fosters universal respect for human dignity.
