AIA Hawaii State Council Medal of Honor
Congratulations to Donald Goo, FAIA recipients of the Medal of Honor!
The AIA Hawaii State Council presented Donald Goo, FAIA with the Medal of Honor on Aug. 22 at the landmark Hawaii Convention Center, a structure that stands as a testament to Goo’s award-winning design leadership and his lasting impact on Hawai‘i’s built environment. The Medal of Honor is the highest accolade that the Hawaii Chapter bestows and represents only the seventh time that the Medal of Honor has been presented. Read more.
The international architecture and planning firm known today as WATG was just Wimberly and Cook in 1959 when Goo first joined. He would later be elevated to partner and the firm renamed Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo. Goo served as president, CEO and finally chairman, leading many prominent local projects from the re-visioning of the Sheraton Maui in 1960 and 1997 and the major re-positioning of the Hilton Hawaiian Village from 1982 to 1988, as well as the design of Bank of Hawaii's iconic Waikiki building with Jerry Allison, FAIA and Pete Wimberly, FAIA in 1966 and the Hawai‘i Convention Center with George Loschky of LMN in 1997. He has also led international projects as diverse as the master plan for a resort in Kurumbunai, Malaysia and Arizona’s Wild Horse Resort for the Pima Maricopa Native American tribe.
Goo was elevated into the AIA Fellowship program and received the FAIA designation in 1988, recognizing the significant contribution he had made to architecture and society, as well as his design excellence on a national level.
