Join the YAF's September Hard Hat Tour at the University of Hawaii West Oahu's Creative Media Facility in conjunction with DBIA-WPR Hawaii Chapter. The design build project led by Kiewit Building Group with Next Design and Gensler is slated to be completed in June 2020. Meet @ Job Site Trailer. Join us at Brick Oven Pizza after the tour at 889 Kamokila Blvd, Kapolei.
Cost: Members $10 / Non-members $15. Max 25 participants. No walk-ins.
PPE Required: Must provide your own hard hat, safety vest, safety glasses, and steel toed boots. Safety gloves recommended. Must wear full PPE upon arrival on-site or will not be allowed on-site.

AIA Announces Climate Change Action Initiative
AIA National’s Board of Directors approves a member-led resolution to rally architects in mitigating and adapting the built environment.
“This is a defining moment for the Institute,” said 2019 AIA President William Bates, FAIA. “We are making this our top priority in order to address the crisis our communities face. Moving the needle on this critical issue—that threatens the future of our planet and humanity—requires our firm commitment to achieving carbon-neutral goals in the built environment and our immediate action. Design for Climate Action: Intersections Symposium at A'20 is open for submissions. In support of the AIA Resolution for Urgent and Sustained Climate Action, submit your research and/or projects that address climate change across scales—from building, to community, to the planet.

AIA has opened its call for nominations for appointments to 2020 AIA National Committees.
AIA is seeking nominations of members interested in serving on national committees. To nominate members interested in serving or view all committees and advisory groups with openings in 2020, visit the nomination homepage (member login required).
The nomination process closes at 5 p.m. ET on October 4, 2019; appointments will be made, and nominees notified by December 31, 2019.

The Living Building Challenge - This film is submitted by AIA Honolulu member Aaron Ackerman, Assoc. AIA with Bowers + Kubota who is on a mission to accomplish the Living Building Challenge as well as to inspire others to be environmentally proactive.

- Sep. 19: HSBP Is Hart on Track? Update on the Hawaii Rail Project
Listen to Andrew Robbins, HART’s Executive Director and CEO, is leading the elevated rail line project in Hawaii, a project which has seen its price tag rise to more than $9 billion from about $5 billion. Most overruns predate Mr. Robbins, who is the sixth person to lead the project. Does Mr. Robbins expect costs to exceed the current projection of $9.02 billion? What are the chances that the entire rail line will be finished by the current 2025 projection?

- Sep. 20: MIH Masonry & Energy Codes Seminar (4 AIA/CES LUs)
Attend the Masonry Institute of Hawaii's seminar. The 2015 International Energy Conservation Code (ICC, 2015) requires insulation to be added to the exterior of masonry and concrete walls in order to comply with the minimum R-value requirements. Speaker Dr. W. Mark McGinley's research has indicated that concrete and masonry walls with an exterior reflective coating can provide an equivalent R-value based on the exception that the MIH/MCAH is seeking.
