AIA Honolulu gets lots of inquiries about what work our members do each week and we always tell them to use our AIA ArchitectAssociate Architect or Local Allied Member Finder on our website.

Can they find you?  To update your member profile go to the AIA Honolulu website and log-in, with your username/password under "Sign In".

Nov 23: Architectural Walking Tour - Spots Still Available!

Spots are still available for our regular bi-weekly Saturday Architectural Walking Tours. This is a fun architectural treat that should not be missed. Invite your family and friends for some holiday fun.

The tour is of downtown Honolulu through the eyes of an architect from 9am-11:30am (check in 8:45am) starting at the Center for Architecture.

Dec 11: Brighten the Holidays for the Youth at Hale Kipa!

RSVP Today!  Wednesday, Dec 11, 11:30am-1pm, Center for Architecture (Must RSVP for free lunch) 

Donate a gift to the CFA by December 11, and join us as we wrap presents and enjoy a free holiday lunch. 

Hale Kipa is a local private non-profit organization focusing on the youth who are at risk, e.g. homeless or living with an abusive family. The organization supports teens by providing a wide range of programs which includes emergency shelter, independent living skills, and a transitional family program.

For pre-wrapped gifts, please include a tag or note giving a brief description of the contents and approximate value.  If you're unable to attend our GMM on Dec. 11 but would like to donate a gift, please drop it off at the CFA no later than Dec. 11 by noon.

AIA Honolulu committee meetings are open to all active AIA Honolulu members.


Nov 20: 2018 IEBC Review, 11:30am-1pm

AIA Honolulu members are going through and giving input on draft amendments to the 2012 International Existing Building Code (IEBC), which are proposed to be incorporated into the Revised Ordinances of Honolulu (ROH).


Nov. 26: Emerging Professionals Committee, 12-1pm

This committee is the umbrella for all programs geared toward emerging professionals, including but not limited to: Mentorship Program, Young Architects Forum and the Architectural Exam Prep (ARE Prep).  This committee is for associate members and anyone in the early stages of his and her careers.


Dec 9: Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Architecture, 12pm-1pm

This committee will support equity, diversity, and inclusion within the design community and create a stronger profession by providing opportunities for career progression, leadership development, elevating work culture, and inclusive talent recruitment.


Dec 12: Housing Committee Meeting, 12pm-1pm

The AIA Honolulu Housing Committee was created to promote the development of safe, attractive, accessible, and affordable housing. It will provide leadership, advocacy, and education to the profession and the public in matters related to housing design.

AIA Small Project Design Grant

The Small Project Design (SPD) advisory committee is pleased to announce the 2019-2020 Small Project Design Knowledge Community Grant. The purpose is to provide financial support for non-profits working with architects on community-based projects. Along with supporting the work of non-profits, AIA wants to help demonstrate the value of hiring an architecture firm (and AIA member) for community projects, by helping cover some of the costs associated with hiring a design team. One grant for up to $3,000 will be awarded.  Submission deadline is January 10, 2020 at 5pm PST.


AIA National Now Accepting Applications for 5 Scholarships

The Architects Foundation, the philanthropic partner of The American Institute of Architects (AIA), is now accepting applications for five scholarships supporting students pursuing architecture degrees.

Diversity Advancement Scholarship: This multiyear scholarship supports high school and undergraduate minority students who are entering, enrolled in, or transferring into an undergraduate architecture program recognized by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). Scholarships may be renewed every year for up to five years or until the degree is completed ($20,000 total award toward tuition and fees).

Payette Sho-Ping Chin Memorial Academic Scholarship: This is a $10,000 award toward tuition and fees supporting a woman studying architecture within a NAAB-accredited bachelor or master’s degree program. The awardee will also receive a senior mentor from Payette for the scholarship year.

Yann Weymouth Graduate Scholarship: The Yann Weymouth Graduate Scholarship supports a graduate student whose work demonstrates an exemplary focus at the design intersection of sustainability, resilience, wellness and beauty. The scholarship recipient receives $5,000 toward tuition and fees and mentorship from Yann Weymouth, AIA, for the scholarship year.

The a/e ProNet David W. Lakamp Scholarship: The a/e ProNet David W. Lakamp Scholarship is awarded annually to two students who demonstrate a strong interest in practice and risk management in the field of architecture. Each student receives a $5,000 award toward tuition and fees.

The Architects Foundation / McAslan Fellowship: Established in 2019, the Architects Foundation/McAslan Fellowship supports travel for two students to engage with UK-based firm John McAslan+ Partners. Each student will receive a $7,500 award to work with the firm on a homelessness initiative in Scotland.

The application period for these five scholarships is open through Jan. 17, 2020.  More information on the Foundation’s scholarship programs can be found online.

New AIA Construction Manager Documents

Construction Management is one of the most widely used project delivery methods allowing for more collaboration in the pre-construction phase.  The Construction Manager as Constructor (CMc) documents were release on Nov. 15 and the Construction Manager as Adviser (CMa) release on Feb. 6, 2020.
