Join the International Masonry Institute (IMI) and Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 1 Hawaii for a free continuing education program on designing with tile and a discussion of tile challenges and opportunities unique to the Hawaii market. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. The program is registered with 1 AIA/CES LU (HSW). GMM This Thursday, Feb. 20! Hawaii's Landfill Conditions & Construction Waste Diversion Options (1 HSW)

Hawaii’s landfills are quickly approaching maximum capacities requiring an evaluation of our state’s waste management practices. The construction industry is responsible for 42% of Oahu’s waste and without exploring alternate opportunities, these landfills will require expanded facilities, impacting our local communities. Our panel discussion will include a review of the current state of our landfills, planned landfill expansions and potential impact as well as available alternates for diverting construction waste. Speakers: Quinn Vittum, director of Re-use Hawaii, a non-profit organization dedicated to waste reduction through building material salvage and reuse. Makana Paris, serving his fourth term as President of the Prince Kūhiō Hawaiian Civic Club, and second term as the Government Relations Chair of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs.

We invite AIA Honolulu members and Non-Members to participate in our mentorship program geared toward emerging professionals and their development. A formal platform and social group for emerging professionals to engage with industry leaders from diverse backgrounds. Five learning groups will engage a new mentor every other month in Pau Hana setting.
2020 Kick-Off Pau Hana! The program begins with a Kick-Off Pau Hana, which will be an informal gathering to introduce the program and allow participants to meet the mentors and their learning groups. All participants are strongly encouraged to attend the kick-off pau hana.
Program Cost: $50 - Includes Pau Hana Kickoff + 5 Group Mentoring Sessions.

Proposed Executive Order Takes Aim at Modern Architecture
In the wake of the proposed executive order titled "Make Federal Buildings Beautiful Again," the architecture community is speaking up about the top-down directive on architectural style.
The order states that "the classical architectural style shall be the preferred and default style" for federal courthouses, all federal public buildings in the Capital region, and all other federal public buildings whose cost exceeds $50 million.

AIA National Testified on Climate Action
On Wednesday, February 12, AIA member and COTE Chair Julie Hiromoto, AIA, testified before the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, Subcommittee on Energy. The hearing was entitled, "Saving Energy: Legislation to Improve Energy Efficiency and Storage." Hiromoto spoke about the importance of increasing building energy efficiency and maintaining current federal policy that phases out the use of fossil fuels in federal buildings. National Survey Says Public Supports Licensing Standards
According to a recent national survey released by the Alliance for Responsible Professional Licensing (ARPL), there is public support for maintaining licensing standards for professions that have an impact on health, safety and welfare. Read more >
