Patriot Day - September 11, 2015
WE REMEMBER! Today we observe Patriot Day as the National Day of Service and Remembrance. This occurs on Sep. 11 of each year in memory of the 2,977 killed in the 2001 Sep. 11 attacks. The flag of the United States will be flown at half-staff at the White House and official government buildings all around the world and at many individual American homes. Additionally, a moment of silence was observed to correspond with the attacks at 8:46am (EDT), the time the first plane, American Airlines Flight 11, struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. NEVER FORGET!
In Remembrance

Architects Issue Statement Supporting Surgeon General's National Call to Action on Walking and Walkable Communties
This week the AIA issued the following statement on U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy's 'Call to Action' report on the health benefits of walking and barriers to walkable communities.
"We heartily endorse Surgeon General Murthy's 'Step It Up' initiative to address the healthy benefits of walking and remove barriers to walkable communities," said AIA CEO Robert Ivy, FAIA. "Architects are forging partnerships nationwide with schools of medicine and public health, taking a leading role in promoting walkable communities and visionary urban planning as a way to combat the epidemic of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and obesity."
Ivy went on to say "It's important also for our profession to take the Surgeon General's 'Call to Action' not only to urban America, where walking and biking to work has become a way of life. We must also take it to suburban communities nationwide, where the design and planning have too often focused on the automobile and inhibited walking, livable communities and active living." Time to Step Up & Lead! Looking for a Few Good Members
The AIA Hawaii State Council is organizing two committees to work on legislative and regulatory subjects on behalf of all Hawaii’s architects. Each committee has an “agenda” that matches current state legislative and regulatory issues monitored by AIA as government advocacy service to members.
Agenda: 1) Defend Hawaii’s currently strong architect licensing law. HRS 464 is the strongest licensing/consumer protection law in USA with respect to what requires architect seal and signature & 2) Liaison with State of Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Engineers Architects Surveyors & Landscape Architects Board (EASLA). Read more.
2) PRACTICE AND PROSPERITY COMMITTEE
Agenda: 1) Public Procurement. Defend and improve existing Qualifications-Based Selection QBS for public design contracts. Monitor public agency conformance and procedural decisions & 2) Public Procurement. Discuss impact of small business preferences for state contracts. Read more.
ENGAGE. CONNECT. SUCCEED! To accomplish these goals we are looking for volunteers from every size of firm to help us develop AIA positions on issues and legislation. You will familiarize yourselves with the issues, consider the ramifications to architects, and then recommend an action to the AIA Hawaii Board of Directors. Make sure your opinion and your company position is well represented on a Committee. Otherwise, others will help develop AIA positions on legislative and regulatory issues.
Interested? Email Louis Fung, AIA and Dan Chun, FAIA no later than Sep. 15, 2015.
