Ben Lee, FAIA Talks Architecture in Pacific Business News

ArchDaily 100 Top Projects Listed with Two Hawaii Projects Featured

In celebration of 10 years since their launch, ArchDaily has sorted through the thousands of projects published since 2006 to highlight those that represented a milestone for their time. They also reviewed the most popular projects from each of their sites, those that readers continued to highlight after many visits.

Among the top 100 American Architecture projects, great architecture in Hawaii was represented by Craig Steely, Lavaflow 5 and Flansburgh Architects, Seabury Hall Creative Arts Center.

UH Manoa Architecture Undergraduates Win Award in International Competition

Congratulations from AIA Honolulu! As reported in the UH News Autopost, a team of undergraduates in the UH Mānoa School of Architecture have won an award in the 2016 Tongji International Construction Festival's 10th “Feng Yu Zhu Cup” Design and Construction Competition in Shanghai, China. The UH project, "Grassroots House," ranked number six in the first round of jury voting and ultimately received a third prize award in the final round. The entry was also named "most popular with children," according to the Shanghai media.

The team members are undergraduate students Chloe Bennie, Jannah Dela Cruz, Janica Domingo, Angus Lin and Richard Robinson. Their instructor is Architecture Assistant Professor Hongtao Zhou.

June Topic: Details of organizing a public forum on the sustainability of Waikiki.

The role of the AIA Honolulu RUDC Committee is to review, discuss and advocate for positions on various urban design issues that affect our built environment and the communities we serve.

June 26: "Hawaii in Design" Exhibition Tour (1 LU)

Register Online! On Sunday, June 26, 1pm-2:30pm you are invited to attend a gallery tour of the Hawai’i in Design exhibit on view at the Honolulu Museum of Art.

The tour will be led by Arts of Hawaii curator Healoha Johnston, accompanied by Kuhao Zane, whose work is featured in the exhibition. The exhibit “features the work of 10 local designers who all reference Hawai’i’s environment – both built and natural – and are at the confluence of deeply rooted aesthetic principles mingled with global impulses.”

Cost: $20 (admission to museum and café included). Advance registration and payment is required. Tour is limited to 20 participants!

AIA Event Update from the Big Island

Big Island Architecture Day at STEM Camp

On May 31 the Hawaii Island Section of AIA Honolulu teamed up with the Kealakehe High School robotics team to present Architecture Day at their annual STEM Camp. The theme for this year was Tension and Compression.

Over one hundred students grades 3 through 8 learned about how these fundamental engineering concepts are used in architecture, infrastructure, and robotics through games and hands-on activities.

Each student built a tensegrity structure with straws and rubber bands. Then teams of 6 students built platforms out of popsicle sticks and pipe cleaners. The platforms were tested by placing small robots of different weights onto the platforms.

AIA member Architects Shane Kitchens, Zon Sullenberger, Shaun Roth along with intern architect Erik Tremain served as mentors.
