In Remembrance

Aloha David Cheever: 1938-2016

It is with sad hearts we inform you that longtime AIA Honolulu friend, David Cheever, passed away on June 23, 2016.  David came to the Islands in 1969 from San Francisco to work for an advertising agency. Following a couple of years there, he became vice-president of marketing for Bank of Hawaii. In 1979 he started his marketing consultancy-David Cheever Marketing-which served a wide range of clients from tourism to financial institutions to food companies. He even owned a popular bicycle shop for many years together with his family. He was a true entrepreneur. David wrote many notable books and more recently the popular Star-Advertiser monthly column "Keep Hawaii Hawaii". He was very active in several professional and civic groups, and one of the founding members of the Hawaii Architectural Foundation. Twice David put his consultancy in abeyance while serving as the executive director, first for the American Institute of Architects in 1999 and then Historic Hawai’i Foundation in 2005. Mahalo for all your dedication and support David!

A private family celebration was held on July 4th and no public memorial is planned by the family. They welcome contributions to his legacy by supporting causes he held close to his heart: Hawaiian Mission Houses, Hawaii Architectural Foundation and the the Hawaii Public Radio.

Save the Date! Celebration of David Cheever on Aug 4, 2016:
AIA Honolulu and the Hawaii Architectural Foundation are planning to hold a "Celebration of David Cheever" event at the Center for Architecture on Thursday, August 4 from 5pm-7pm. Please join us for some great conversations and refreshments. Stay tuned for more information.

Architecture Billings Index Remains on Solid Footing

Highest levels of demand at residential firms in over two years

Washington, DC – July 20, 2016 – Buoyed by increasing levels of demand across all project types, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) was positive in June for the fifth consecutive month.  As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lead time between architecture billings and construction spending. The AIA reported the June ABI score was 52.6, down from the mark of 53.1 in the previous month. This score still reflects an increase in design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings).  The new projects inquiry index was 58.6, down from a reading of 60.1 the previous month.

“Demand for residential projects has surged this year, greatly exceeding the pace set in 2015. This suggests strong future growth for housing in the coming year,” said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA, PhD.  “While we expect to see momentum continue for the overall design and construction industry in the months ahead, the fact that the value of design contracts dipped into negative territory in June for the first time in more than two years is something of a concern.”
