RSVP Online! Join our Young Architects Forum (YAF) Thursday, Sep. 8 from 5:30-7:00pm when they visit Group 70 International.

A firm tour followed by a presentation by several of their staff about their firm, specifically discussing how they got started and where they are today, thoughts on multidisciplinary practice, how they have used and leveraged technology over the years, their value of professional development, and next steps.

This event is free but we are asking for online registration for planning purposes.

Topic: “Unfortunately, Copyright Infringement is not Theft”

Architects should have knowledge of basic intellectual property concepts, especially copyright law.  We will discuss the common myths and misconceptions about copyright law and will cover topics including ownership of copyrights, copyright infringement, registration of creative works with the federal Copyright Office, trademarks and trade secrets.

Speakers: Bennett Chin, Esq. - attorney for design professionals w/ McCorriston Miller Mukai MacKinnon LLP.

Date Change! Sep 23: RUDC Committee Meeting

RSVP Online! Regional and Urban Design Committee (RUDC) will meet on Friday, September 23, 12-1pm at the Center for Architecture. Open to all AIA Honolulu members (brown bag lunch).

The committee will be discussing a possible position statement incorporating a new version of a "one seat ride" for HART, for review by the general membership.

The role of the AIA Honolulu RUDC committee is to review, discuss and advocate for positions on various urban design issues that affect our built environment and the communities we serve.

Register Online! Thursday, September 22, Center for Architecture, 5:30-7pm.  $10 for AIA/AIAS members; $20 for non-members.

September Topic: Structural Systems – Part II

Building upon the foundational structural principles of Part I, Part II will focus upon:  principles for selecting a structural system, types of structural systems, materials used for structural systems and their relative strengths and weaknesses, construction of structural systems particularly connections, and building code requirements such as loading and allowable stresses.  This second session will also present the structural vignette.

Join Design Talk Hawaii host Matt Gilbertson on AM760 KGU or podcast at 760kgu.biz Friday, Sep. 2, 4:00pm. 

Join Matt Gilbertson, AIA for another "Design Talk Hawaii" as he talks with Reem Bassous, a professor at Leeward Community College and lecturer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa for 9 years. Her paintings and drawing installations have been featured in national and international exhibitions. Her recent shows include a solo exhibition titled Beyond The Archive at the Honolulu Museum of Art and a four-person collaborative show at Koa Gallery at KCC.

Nov 7-9: Hawaii SFPE Seminar Presentation - 2016 NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm Code

Register Online! The Hawaii Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers are sponsoring this three-day seminar through a special arrangement with the National Fire Protection Association. It will take place on Nov. 7-9 from 8am-5pm each day at the Hale Ikena, Fort Shafter Golf Clubhouse. The cost is $1295 per person.
