Topic: “Unfortunately, Copyright Infringement is not Theft”
Architects should have knowledge of basic intellectual property concepts, especially copyright law. We will discuss the common myths and misconceptions about copyright law and will cover topics including ownership of copyrights, copyright infringement, registration of creative works with the federal Copyright Office, trademarks and trade secrets.

Sep 23: RUDC Committee Meeting
RSVP Online! Regional and Urban Design Committee (RUDC) will meet on Friday, September 23, 12-1pm at the Center for Architecture. Open to all AIA Honolulu members (brown bag lunch).
The committee will be discussing a possible position statement incorporating a new version of a "one seat ride" for HART, for review by the general membership.
The role of the AIA Honolulu RUDC committee is to review, discuss and advocate for positions on various urban design issues that affect our built environment and the communities we serve.

ARE Sessions Sep 22: Structural Systems – Part II

September Topic: Structural Systems – Part II. Building upon the foundation of structural principles in Part I, Part II will focus upon: Principles for selecting a structural system, types of structural systems, materials used for structural systems and their relative strengths and weaknesses, construction of structural systems particularly connections, and building code requirements such as loading and allowable stresses. This second session will also present the structural vignette.

To help get ready for the November 1 launch of the Architect Registration Examination (ARE) 5.0, on Thursday NCARB released the ARE 5.0 Handbook. The document provides in-depth information about the structure of each division, explains objectives individuals are assessed on and provides references to additional materials.

On "Design Talk Hawaii" Matt will talk to Taylour Chang, Director of the Doris Duke Theater, who curates and oversees the museum’s film/music department. As President of the Yale Film Society, she organized film screenings, lectures, and symposia with the Whitney Humanities Center. Taylour has directed documentaries and short films that have screened at the Hawai’i International Film Festival and other festivals around the world.

Vote for Hawaii! Public Voting Now Open for 2nd Annual I Look Up Film Challenge
WHAT: The American Institute of Architects (AIA) invited filmmakers and architects to team-up to create a short film showing architecture as a solution. With more than double the number of films submitted in 2015, the public is encouraged to select their favorite film as part of the People’s Choice Award. Though a jury of architects and filmmakers is reviewing submissions for select prizes, the People’s Choice Award is an opportunity to showcase the film that most resonates with the public.
Hawaii's contribution is titled "ALBIZIA" and again submitted by Kaoru Lovett, Ronald Ribao, Graham Hart. This is the same team who created "Mixed Plate Hawaii" and won the People's Choice Award in 2015!

Oct 8: Exploring the Gold Coast (1 LU)
The Hawaii Chapter of Docomomo will lead an architectural walking tour through a neighborhood at the end of Waikiki known as the Gold Coast. The tour will discuss the development of the area during the post-World War II era, and will feature mid-rise apartments, as well as the Outrigger Canoe Club and the Elks’ Lodge. Tour and registration will begin at Outrigger Canoe Club Oct. 8, Check in 8:30am, tour at 9am.
