In issuing its first request for partnerships, the Foundation is seeking three university-led, multi-disciplinary teams to implement the second phase of the NRI. AIA Hawaii State Council

AIA Hawaii State Council letter to Governor Ige:  Funding request for the State Building Code Council

Hawaii’s building codes are an important component for technical innovation, disaster preparedness, lower property insurance rates and more efficient business operations of the broad construction industry. Our legislature has continually included, supported and approved state funding to administer the State Building Code Council (Council). However, no governor to date has authorized the released of the appropriated funding.  Therefore, AIA Hawaii State Council has recently sent a letter to Governor Ige recommending that the State of Hawaii to appropriate the needed funds to make needed changes in Hawaii’s building codes.

Nationally, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has documented that every $1 spent in disaster preparedness saves $3 spent in disaster recovery.  We believe that maintaining our state building codes is a key factor in Hawaii’s disaster preparedness. However, the current administrative structure and support of the State Building Codes Council, which relies on the volunteers to do all of the work---including drafting the Hawaii administrative rules— is not practical, timely or effective.  The State of Hawaii has already skipped one code cycle and we are at a point where the next edition of the building code has already been published.  At this rate the Council will never be current with the latest codes which means that our buildings are not keeping up with the current requirements for earthquake, hurricane and flooding. Read the entire letter.
