Presented by AIA Honolulu, CSI Hawaii, HAF, AIA Hawaii State Council and the UH School of Architecture.
At the 2018 Design Symposium, some of the most creative architects, landscape architects, planners and design professionals in Hawaii and throughout the Northwest and Pacific Region will explore the theme: Building Voices: Livable Cities & Communities.
Three full days of programming:
- Tuesday, Nov. 13: AIA Northwest & Pacific Region Leadership Summit and Annual meeting at the Center for Architecture.
- Wednesday, Nov. 14: The 19th Annual Pacific Building Trade Expo with a robust line-up of topical seminars as well as luncheon Keynote speaker Ed Mazria, FAIA.
- Thursday, Nov. 15: Breakfast keynote presentation followed by a half-day of interactive workshops that expand upon educational programming from the previous day. In the evening you are invited to join us for the AIA Honolulu and AIA Northwest Pacific Region Design Awards.
BECOME A PRESENTER: The Symposium Committee invites you to submit your workshop or session proposals. The Design Symposium sessions and workshops will be held at the Hawaii Convention Center all day Wednesday, November 14, and the morning of Thursday, November 15. Apr 27: Oahu Public Film Night: BIG TIME, 5:30pm-8pm
The 2017 Danish documentary “BIG TIME” (1.33 minutes) will be shown at the Center for Architecture and follows Danish architect Bjarke Ingels for the seven-year period from 2009 to 2016 as he embarks on his most ambitious project yet: Two World Trade Center. In 2016, Ingels was named one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People. We will end the evening with an open discussion moderated by Geoff Lewis, AIA.

Apr 28: SOLD OUT! Architectural Walking Tour: Kaka’ako
On Saturday April 28 our Architectural Walking Tour in Kaka’ako will take place with tours starting from 3pm-4:50pm. This is a SOLD OUT event and we are looking forward to seeing all our registered walkers.

Apr 30: Land Use Ordinance Task Force Meeting
Register for Monday, April 30, 12pm-1pm! We invite all interested members to engage in the unique opportunity to take a look at Honolulu’s current zoning code and give feedback to the city for their upcoming revisions to the land use ordinance LUO. Qualifies for 1 AIA/CES LU.
May 1: EASLA Taskforce Meeting
Register for Tuesday, May 1, 12pm-1pm! The joint task force will work on recreating the certificate of Licensure wall certificates. Volunteers will contribute time, talent and personal resources to establish a new design and production criteria for the Hawaii license wall certificate.
May 3: Housing Committee Meeting, 12pm-1pm
Register for Thursday, May 3, 12pm-1pm! The AIA Honolulu Housing Committee was created to promote the development of safe, attractive, accessible, and affordable housing. It will provide leadership, advocacy, and education to the profession and the public in matters related to housing design.

Ke Kilohana is an affordable housing project in Ward Village designed by CDS International, developed by the Howard Hughes Corporation, and undergoing construction by Nordic PCL. Ke Kilohana is a 43-story tower with 7-story parking garage and ground floor retail to be occupied by Longs CVS and is LEED Certified.

AIA National Update
Architectural Billings Remain Positive in March
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported that architecture firm billings rose for the sixth consecutive month in March, although the pace of growth slowed modestly from February. Read more.
Overall, the AIA’s Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score for March was 51.0 (any score over 50 indicates billings growth), which still reflects a healthy business environment. While business conditions softened somewhat at firms located in the Northeast region, billings remained strong at firms located in the South and West regions.
