Aug 22: AIA HSC Meeting: Licensing & Consumer Protection Committee

- Vote for Proposed Bylaws Amendment: Our proposed bylaws amendment is to create a second Associate AIA Board Member position and increase the Associate AIA Board Member positions from (1) to (2)-year staggered terms. Read our proposed Bylaws Amendment.

AIA Honolulu Board of Directors Elections – Who Can Vote? As stated in the Bylaws, all AIA members and Associate AIA members in good standing for 2018, and assigned by the Institute to this Chapter as their primary membership, are eligible to vote at this meeting. Local allied members may attend but may not vote.
Vote by Limited Proxy: If you can't attend the AIA Honolulu Annual Business Meeting per the Bylaws eligibility requirement email AIA Honolulu.

AIA Honolulu Film Night: Selected Films by Charles & Ray Eames
On Wednesday, August 15 Daniel Friedman, FAIA, moderated and introduced six films by the legendary Charles and Ray Eames, among the twentieth century's most enduringly influential designers and design thinkers.
Immediately followed by the panel discussion by, award-winning architects and School of Architecture faculty members Karla Sierralta and Brian Strawn (Strawn+Sierralta). What can we learn from Charles and Ray Eames’ design process and vision for the future of design and architecture? Thank you to all members and guests who joined us for a fun and educational evening. August GMM: Talk Story with Mayor Kirk Caldwell
On Thursday, August 16 The Honorable Kirk Caldwell, Mayor City and County of Honolulu came to the AIA Honolulu Center for our August General Membership Meeting for our annual "Talk Story with the Mayor" event.

AIA National
AIA Issues Statement on School Safety
AIA has issued a release, "Where We Stand: School Design and Student Safety," on their ongoing commitment to school safety. They plan to dedicate resources and expertise through leading efforts at the local, state and federal levels of government to update school design guidelines; supporting collaborative and continuing education to achieve safe school design; striving to make safe school design eligible for federal grants; and establishing a federal clearinghouse on school design.

As part of this commitment to school safety, AIA and its members are launching a variety of initiatives to help address violence in schools through design (read more about these initiatives). They will focus on two goals:
- Making architectural and design services for schools an allowable use of funds within existing federal funding and grants; and
- Establishing a federal clearinghouse of resources on school design best practices for school officials, architects and other design professionals to keep them informed.
AIA State Economic Profiles
AIA's state economic profiles, a collection of economic indicators that can be used to help make better business decisions, have been updated for mid-2018. This important research showcases the impact of the architecture industry on society including employment and gross domestic product.
