Join us for a special evening featuring six films by the legendary Charles and Ray Eames, among the twentieth century's most enduringly influential designers and design thinkers.
Moderated and selected by Daniel Freidman, FAIA, Dean and ACSA Distinguished Professor at University of Hawaii, School of Architecture, the films include Design Q & A (1972, 5 min.), IBM at the Fair (1965, 8 min.), Fiberglass Chairs (1970, 9 min.), Goods (1971, 6 min.), and House After Five Years of Living (1955, 11 minutes).
Immediately following the presentation, award-winning architects and School of Architecture faculty members Karla Sierralta and Brian Strawn (Strawn+Sierralta) will offer commentary and questions about the Eamesʻs practice, legacy, and significance in a contemporary context.

Joy Davidson, AIA has been named a Partner in the firm of Mason Architects, Inc. A 16 year veteran of the firm, Davidson is a Historical Architect, often acting as a consultant to other design firms. Active in the Historic Hawaii Foundation, she is currently secretary of the Board of Trustees of that organization. Davidson holds a Doctorate in Architecture from the University of Hawaii and has a Graduate Certificate in Historic Preservation.
Melanie B. Y. Islam, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD +C has been named an Associate in the firm of Mason Architects, Inc. Ms. Islam manages and delivers sustainable focused projects as her role as project architect on various educational and commercial projects. Active in US Green Building Council, she is currently Board Chair of the Hawaii Community. Islam holds a Doctorate of Architecture from the University of Hawaii and previously worked with landscape and planning firm PBR Hawaii before returning to Mason in 2012.

AIA Makes Statement Against EPA Proposed Pro-Asbestos Rule Change
Earlier this summer, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a proposal that could lead to increased use of asbestos in the construction of buildings and other products.
AIA submitted formal comments to the EPA in opposition to its proposed Significant New Use Rule, which would allow for new asbestos products to be considered for future manufacturing, processing and importing.
AIA 2018 President Carl Elefante, FAIA, issued the following statement in response to the EPA’s proposal:
“The AIA strongly opposes the EPA’s proposed rule. Asbestos can cause significant and irreversible risks—including cancer, mesothelioma and other diseases—to those who come into direct contact with friable and airborne asbestos fibers. This is especially concerning for contractors, builders, architects and homeowners who could be exposed to dislodged asbestos fibers during the demolition and building process if they are unaware of its presence. The EPA has offered no compelling reason for considering new products using asbestos, especially when the consequences are well known and have tragically affected the lives of so many people. The EPA should be doing everything possible to curtail asbestos in the United States and beyond—not providing new pathways that expose the public to its dangers.” Read the AIA’s submitted comments to the EPA here.

Projections Reveal Nonresidential Construction Spending to Grow
Construction spending is projected to grow through 2019, according to a new consensus forecast from The American Institute of Architects (AIA).
Spending on nonresidential buildings nationally increased only modestly last year, barely outpacing inflation in building costs. Halfway through the seventh year of continuous growth for the cyclical construction industry, 2018 might have looked to be the year that the industry would enter another recession. However, when polled at the beginning of this year, the AIA Consensus Construction Forecast Panel—consisting of leading economic forecasters— instead saw an acceleration in activity, projecting 4.0 percent growth in 2018 and a nearly equal 3.9 percent in 2019.
The AIA Consensus Construction Forecast panel is comprised of Dodge Data & Analytics, Wells Fargo Securities, LLC, IHS Economics, Moody’s Economy.com, ConstructConnect, Associated Builders & Contractors, and FMI. The forecast has been conducted for 18 years. Read more.
