AIAS Hawai’i, AIA Honolulu, the School of Architecture at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, and the University of Hawai’i Community Design Center are proud to announce the 2018 Building Voices Student Design Competition.

HONOLULU CONNECTS, being held in partnership with the City and County of Honolulu and the Mayor's Office, is open to any and all students who are in a design focused program and recent graduates that are within one year of their graduation in the United States and its territories.

The competition challenges competitors to design a series of discrete urban interventions that create a cohesive and continuous design district stretching from the Honolulu Museum of Art to the ocean at Kewalo Harbor.

The 2018 Building Voices Student Design Competition centers on three strategic sites surrounding Honolulu's historic Thomas Square. Proposed design interventions are intended to act as model design typologies for deployment throughout the entirety of the Culture + Performing Arts Corridor. Design solutions should be both unique to Hawai‘i and be able to serve as models for communities around the world.

August Architecture Firm Billings Rebound as Building Investment Spurt Continues

Architecture firm billings rebounded solidly in August, posting their eleventh consecutive month of growth, according to a report released today from The American Institute of Architects (AIA).  AIA’s Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score for August was 54.2 compared to 50.7 in July (any score over 50 represents billings growth). Most of the growth continues to come from the South and the multi-family residential sector.

“Billings at architecture firms in the South continue to lead the healthy increase in design activity that we’ve seen across the profession in recent months,” said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA, PhD. “Nationally, growth across all building sectors remains solidly positive."  Read More.
