Apr 30: "Harnessing the Strengths of Introverts" (1 LU)
Register Online Today! Tuesday, April 30, 12pm-1:30pm, Center for Architecture
Research has shown that extroverts tend to be more successful in the corporate world, earning more and reaching senior level managerial roles faster. However, recent leadership studies have shown that introverts make as good, if not better leaders than extroverts, but that introverts lack essential tools to help them land leadership roles.
• How do we ensure that introverts with great leadership potential in organizations do not get overlooked?
• What are best practices and tips for the formal mentoring of high potential introverts?
• How do I network or find mentors as an introvert?
Speakers: Eric K. Yeaman, President and COO, First Hawaiian Bank and Glen Kaneshige, President, Nordic PCL Construction.
Cost: $30 AIA Members, $35 Non-Members & $20 Students. Cost includes lunch.
May 8: AIA-GCA 2019 Event #2 - The Perfect P3 Project
Register Online! Wednesday, May 8, 11:30am-1pm at the AIA Center for Architecture
Our latest AIA/GCA seminar will continue our P3 discussions by exploring current P3 projects in Hawaii and the local opportunities and challenges with Lance Wilhelm. Transit oriented development, downtown revitalization, conversion of obsolete retail and industrial sites, brownfield cleanup, and mixed-use development are all more economically and physically complex than the development of the past and, in most markets, require some type of public private partnership to succeed. What can the AIA and GCA communities do to enhance the potential for successful public private partnerships?
Recently, ULI published a manual on Public Partnerships: From Principals to Practice, written by members of ULI’s two public private partnership product councils. Attendees at the AIA meeting of May 8 will receive a download code to obtain a copy of this publication for free.
Cost: $10 AIA Members & GCA Members (GCA members must apply the promo code “GCA” at registration for member fee), $20 for non-members.

Architecture Billings Index Down in March
Following consistently increasing demand for design services for over two years, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) dipped into negative territory in March, according to a new report today from The American Institute of Architects (AIA).
The ABI score for March was 47.8, down from 50.3 in February. Indicators of work in the pipeline, including inquiries into new projects and the value of new design contracts remained positive.
“Though billings haven’t contracted in a while, it is important to note that it does follow on the heels of a particularly tough late winter period for much of the country,” said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA. “Many indicators of future work at firms still remain positive, although the pace of growth of design contracts has slowed in recent months.” Read the full AIA press release HERE.
