Aloha Kurt Mitchell, AIA

Clik here to view.It is with deep sadness we inform you of the passing of Kurt H. Mitchell, AIA, NCARB, RDI, Managing Principal in the RIM Architects’ Hawaii office, on Friday, May 31.
Kurt was a long time member of AIA Honolulu and a major figure in the Hawaii community where he practiced architecture for more than 40 years and is well known for his contributions to the Hawaiian culture. Kurt’s notable projects included Kapolei Hale, The James Campbell and Kapolei Buildings, Master Plan for Ewa Marina, Waianae Coast Comprehensive Medical Center, Addition for Queen’s Medical Center West Oahu, Pacific Buddhist Academy and most recently the planning and design for Coconut Beach Resort, and extensive renovations for Mauna Lani Bay Hotel (currently under construction). Kurt’s work has been distinguished with multiple design awards.
Kurt’s architectural career in Hawaii began in 1976 and continued until his death. He worked for RIM as Managing Principal of the Hawaii office from 2014 – 2019.
Kurt’s leadership and industry dedication extended into the community with his involvement in numerous organizations. He served as a Trustee for the Pacific Buddhist Academy, a community facilitator for City and State projects, an Adjunct Professor for UH Mānoa School of Architecture, a State Housing Commissioner, and served as a past board member for the Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce, NAIOP (National Association of Industrial and Office Parks) and of course AIA Honolulu to name a few.

TWO NEW AWARDS FOR 2019!
- The Distinctive Detailed Design Award (New Project Category & Award):
Created for Built projects to honor individual building components and design features that until now may not have been recognized for overall achievement, i.e. prominent façade, grand staircase, or a custom piece of furniture. This award celebrates the craftmanship and attention to detail. Eligibility is the same as for Built Projects, just choose “Distinctive Detail” under the Project Category list. Read more.
- Hawai‘i Energy Award for Excellence in Energy-Efficient Design (Award):
Unbuilt and Built projects in the Institutional or Commercial/Industrial project categories have the option to compete for this award recognizing design that embodies Hawai‘i Energy’s mission to assist Hawai‘i’s consumers in maximizing energy efficiency as a critical step to getting to our state’s clean energy goals and protecting our islands’ environment. You're invited to the Young Architects Forum (YAF) Bowling with Bosses event at Aiea Bowl. Come out and enjoy a night of fun and friendly competition with your peers and bosses alike. This is a great chance to network with upper management and owners of local firms and colleagues from the industry.
To attend this event all attendees must register for themselves and their boss. Registration includes two hours of bowling and shoe rental.
Space is limited to 25 YAFers and 25 bosses, so you must register in advance to guarantee a spot. Walk-ins will not be permitted.

Clik here to view.The recently completed Hoakalei Country Club Clubhouse, designed by Peter Vincent Architects, provides a gateway to the world-class golf course and serves as an upscale gathering place for its members. The concept was inspired by the historic Hawaiian pineapple and sugarcane bungalows; this plantation-style building rests on its own pasture, a 248-acre golf course designed by Ernie Els.
Meet: Meet 4pm at the Hoakalei Country Club, side entrance, and start the tour with an introduction and walk around and inside the building. NO Safety Gear Required.
Cost: $15 for AIA Honolulu members & $25 for Non-Members. No Walk-ins.

Members of AIA Honolulu gathered in Las Vegas for A’19. They attended the AIA Annual Business Meeting voting on bylaws amendments and resolutions. The newly adopted bylaws clarify the titling of allied members and allow the board more flexibility in spending reserve funds while still adhering to policies. Delegates also approved a resolution from the floor, providing a framework for the AIA to prioritize and support urgent climate action to take steps to reduce the carbon emissions of buildings drastically.
Delegates heard speeches from candidates for office, and the newly elected AIA board members are:

NCARB Survey: Number of US Architects Continues to Rise
The annual survey of Architectural Registration Boards shows a 2 percent increase in the number of licensed architects in the United States since 2017 and shows a 13 percent increase over the past decade. The 2018 survey shows that there are now a total of 115,316 licensed architects nationwide.
The 2018 data suggests that the US architecture industry “is healthy and growing.” Learn more about NCARB’s data and the Architectural Registration Board survey.
