14th Canstruction® Competition

Canstruction® Awardees & Vote People's Choice Award until Oct. 12

For our 14th Annual Canstruction® competition, themed “Aloha Spirit,” 4 teams of talented local architects, engineers and allied design professionals “canstructed” giant structures for 6 hours made entirely of thousands of cans of food at our new location in Kahala Mall. View Build Day Images on Facebook!

This year’s Canstruction® structures were designed with nearly 12,000 cans of desperately needed meats, soups, meals, vegetables, and soups. An additional 2,200 cans were used for the Keiki Corner, where kids were provided the opportunity to participate in the fun.

Mahalo to our 2019 Canstruction® judges, all from the AIA Honolulu Board; Joseph Ferraro, FAIA, 2019 AIA Honolulu President; Larry Heim, Hon. Affiliate, 2019 Public Director; and Danielle Yafuso, Assoc. AIA, 2019 Associate Director.

After a blind judging, architects and Canstruction® co-chairs Elyse Takashige, AIA; Reid Mizue, AIA; along with committee members Leo Bisarra, Assoc. AIA; and Stephanie Ing, Assoc. AIA announced the below honors:

Congratulations to this year’s awardees (from left to right):

  • Best Original Design & Structural Ingenuity: HDR – Lono CAN Provide
  • Best Use of Labels & Most Cans: Coffman Engineers – On a Voyage to End Hunger
  •  Honorable Mention: Bowers + Kubota – Lei of Aloha
  • Honorable Mention: G70 / Layton Construction - ʻOhuʻohu Oʻahu Lei i ka ‘ilima (Help Us “Strand” Together to Fight Hunger)

Vote People's Choice until Oct 12: One CAN. One VOTE!
Now we need YOU to come to Kahalo Mall and vote with cans until Sat, Oct. 12.  Vote with as many cans as you like on as many structures as you like!  The structure with the most votes will be named 2019 People’s Choice Award winner.

Since the first Canstruction® competition on Oahu in 2006, AIA Honolulu has raised 394,805 pounds of needed canned food for the Hawaii Foodbank – enough for 310,870 meals for the hungry in our community. YOU CAN Make a Difference!
