Last Reminder! Hawaii State Licensing for Architects due April 30, 2016

The State of Hawaii's renewal cycle for professional licensing of Architects, Engineers, Surveyors and Landscape Architects (every two years) is coming up on April 30, 2016 - Renew Online.  Between May 1, 2014 - April 30, 2016 you need 16 hours of continuing education in public protection topics, such as health, safety and welfare (HSW).  Check your AIA transcripts online.

  As part of the Architecture Month celebration, AIA Honolulu will host a free screening of Gary Hustwit’s “Urbanized,” a feature-length documentary about the design of a modern city.  The film night will take place on Wednesday, April 27 at the Center for Architecture. Doors will open at 6:00pm and introductions and movie will start at 6:30pm. The film will be followed by a Panel Discussion.  Click here to register.

May 12: AIA Monthly Program a Site Tour of Kapiwai

Update on Past Architecture Month Events

Architecture Month: Hawaii Island - Young Architects Workshop

 

The Hawaii Island Section of AIA Honolulu held a very successful Young Architects Workshop on Sunday as part of Architecture Month. The 5th-9th grade students were asked to think of a place in Kona that they are familiar with and is in need of a bus shelter.  They spent a half hour sketching and brainstorming a concept.  Then the model making materials were brought out and they built and elaborated upon their ideas at 1 inch =1 foot scale.  By the end of the workshop eight very creative bus shelters had been created and presented by the students.  

Mahalo to AIA member architects Shaun Roth, AIA; Shane Kitchens, AIA; Kari Kimura, AIA along with intern architect Erik Tremain served as mentors.  Miho Morinoue, the Donkey Mill Art Center Youth Program Coordinator, facilitated the workshop and assisted the students.  View photo's on Facebook.

Architecture Month: Scavenger Hunt

On Thursday night at Design Within Reach, Ala Moana, there was a great turnout of local and out-of town Modernists. 

From approximately 30 attendees, ten enthusiastic teams trekked around Ala Moana in search of vestiges of the old Mid-Century Modern Ala Moana Center.  

Congratulations to first place winner Matt Matsuoka from Seattle. Congrats also to second place finishers Rodney, Paula and Stacie Lee, and third place Shae and Merlinda!  Prizes included books from AIA, Docomomo Hawaii and DWR + gift certificates for AIA Honolulu events. Great fun was had by all! Mahalo DWR and Docomomo for co-hosting another excellent Scavenger Hunt!

AIA Denounces Senate Vote to Kill Energy Conservation Requirements for Federal Buildings

On Wednesday, the AIA issued the following statement following the U.S. Senate's passage of S. 2012, the Energy Policy Modernization Act. The legislation repeals targets for reducing fossil fuel consumption in federal buildings contained in Section 433 of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, which was passed by Congress and signed into law by then-President George W. Bush.

“Cutting fossil fuel consumption in new and renovated federal buildings by 2030 is clearly something we can achieve as a nation. My fellow architects are already designing buildings that are “net zero” consumers of energy. According to government statistics, better designed buildings have already saved our country approximately $560 billion in energy costs since 2005," said AIA President Russell Davidson, FAIA. "It makes no public policy sense for Congress to cave in to the oil and gas lobby and kill requirements to reduce fossil fuel consumption in federal buildings." Read more.

The AIA has selected the Top Ten Green Projects for 2016.  These structures are beyond the typical ‘green building’, and are really at the cutting edge of sustainable technology and employ the most innovative design strategies and materials.

March ABI Continues To Show Growth

The Architecture Billings Index reflects consecutive months of increasing demand for design activity at architecture firms.  As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lead time between architecture billings and construction spending.

AIA reported the March ABI score was 51.9, up from the mark of 50.3 in February. This score reflects an increase in design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index was 58.1, down from a reading of 59.5 last month. Regionally, the South continues to reflect the greatest increase in billings.  Read more

Houzz and the AIA have teamed up to launch PlayHouzz 2016, a charitable playhouse design contest and showcase open to the entire Houzz community. The contest showcases the creativity of architects who took on this year's theme of "Adventure." Their playhouse designs aim to inspire a sense of adventure and imaginative play in all of us.

The design that receives the most likes will be selected as the PlayHouzz 2016 global winner. Houzz and the AIA are delighted to fund the construction of this design and other community favorites, which will benefit children in need around the country.
