2016 AIA Honolulu Design Awards

Join us for cocktails, heavy pupu’s, live music and socializing with friends and colleagues, and of course the Awards Program featuring our 2016 Winners presenting their distinguished project stories!

CES Tour: Sign up for our optional building tour (1 LU) during registration (starts at 4:30pm).

Must Register by Sep. 2 (or Aug 19)! Due to strict security requirements of the Ford Island Military Facility, all attendees are required to obtain security clearance prior to being permitted on base. We can not accommodate late registrations or changes to attendees after the registration deadline.

Vote for People's Choice Award! The 10th Annual People's Choice Award online voting is now open. We encourage all AIA Honolulu members and the public to vote for their favorite project. 

Here's how it works: View all 33 built Design Award entrants. Pick ONE favorite entrant and vote online.

The winner will be announced during the AIA Honolulu Design Awards Gala on September 17 at the NOAA Inouye Regional Center and on our website after the event.

Aug 4: Celebration for David Cheever, 5-7pm

As reported last week, our longtime AIA Honolulu friend, David Cheever, passed away on June 23, 2016. AIA Honolulu and the Hawaii Architectural Foundation are planning to hold a "Celebration of David Cheever" event at the Center for Architecture.

Please join us Thursday, August 4 from 5-7pm as we celebrate and remember together our friend David. 


Aug 11: Wine Tasting Pau Hana & Panel Discussion: Starting Your Own Firm

Register Online! Join the Young Architects Forum (YAF) Pau Hana on Thursday, August 11 from 5:30-7:30pm at the Center for Architecture.  We’ll be socializing, sipping wine, and enjoying a panel discussion with local architects who took the leap and started their own firm. Bring questions for a lively discussion!

Panelists: Reid Mizue, AIA of Omizu Architecture, Cathi Schar, AIA of Collective Studio, Fritz Johnson, AIA of Fritz Johnson Architect, and Janine Clifford, AIA of Clifford Planning.

Cost:  $25 AIA members; $35 non-AIA members. Includes wine tasting and light pupus.

Aug 24: ADA Program: Document Review Process & Common Errors (2 HSW)

Register Online! Wednesday, Aug. 24,8-10am at the Center for Architecture. The Disability and Communications Access Board (DCAB) has prepared a custom program for AIA Honolulu. Members and Non-Members can attend.

Topic: Document Review Process & Common Errors. This will be an overview of the Disability and Communication Access Board's (DCAB) document review process and the common design errors found in their document reviews.

Presenter: Mona Higa, Facility Access Coordinator from the U.S. Access Board/Disability and Communication Access Board (DCAB).

Cost: $20 for members and $35 for non-members. Advanced registration and payment is required.

Associate AIA Update

Aug. 18: Attend A Live NCARB Webinar: AXP, ARE, & Certification (1.5 LU)

Register Now! Join us on Thursday, Aug. 18 at the Center for Architecture from 5:30-7:30pm when Matthew Friesz, AIA, NCARB, LEED Green Assoc., Outreach Manager, Experience + Education from NCARB will present on a range of licensure topics relevant to students, aspiring architects, supervisors, architects, and people in the architecture profession. The presentation will review the steps necessary to achieve licensure to become an architect and other programs to get the most out of your career in architecture.  This live webinar will be broadcast from the Center for Architecture.

AXP Supervisors & Firm Principals! This is an excellent session to attend to learn about the AXP, ARE 5.0 and other updates to continue promoting licensure and professional development in your firms.  This live webinar will be broadcast from the Center for Architecture.

Congrats! Architects Hawaii Ltd Listed with Top 50 Design Firms

Congratulations to Architects Hawaii for being listed as one of the top 50 design firms in an article titled "ARCHITECTURE GIANTS: Innovation from 51 top design firms in" by Building Design + Construction on July 26, 2016. In the article they are showing us what design firms have done to stay ahead of the pack.

For Architects Hawaii Ltd. it notes that they created the AHL Wahine Collaborative, a forum where female employees can share “talk stories” to create a “workplace of trust for women.” Well done AHL!
