The Masonry Institute of Hawaii will be presenting a Masonry Showcase on Thursday, November 10 at 1pm. 

The showcase will consist of a short seminar on masonry materials by John Chrysler, a tour of Tileco Inc.’s block manufacturing plant, and a hands on masonry setting experience.  AIA members will receive 3 CEU credits for attending. View event flyer.

Renew Your 2017 AIA Membership! Members who join, reinstate, or renew from October 1 to December 31, 2016 will be entered into a drawing for one of eleven prizes.  The drawings will be held in early January. 

The Grand Prize is a 2018 Annual national, state, and local only Membership Dues and Second Prize is a choice between a free annual subscription to Black Spectacles software tutorials or a free annual subscription to AIA ARE® Prep: Powered by Black Spectacles.

2016 Annual Business Meeting & Pacific Building Trade EXPO

AIA Honolulu Staff and Board would like to say MAHALO to our +160 architect members, allied members and invited guests who attended our Annual Business meeting on Tuesday, Oct 25 at the Hawaii Convention Center. 

This year we also tried something different and instead of nominee speeches we introduced, for the first time ever, a keynote speaker.  Mahalo to Brigitte Shim of Shim-Sutcliffe Architects who treated us to a great speech.

Film Title: TINY: A Story About Living Small (62 Min).  This is a documentary by Merete Mueller & Christopher Smith, about home, and how we find it.  The film follows the couple’s attempt to build a Tiny House from scratch, and profiles other families who have downsized their lives into houses smaller than the average parking space.  Through homes stripped down to their essentials, the film raises questions about sustainability, good design, and the changing American Dream.

Nov 10: YAF's Local Beer Tasting & Panel Discussion: Alternate Careers for Architects

Join the Young Architects Forum (YAF) on Thursday, Nov. 10 from 5:30 - 7:00pm at the Center for Architecture for a pau hana ad panel discussion on alternate career paths open to those who have trained in Architecture.  YAF Honolulu welcomes professionals that are: nearly licensed, newly licensed, and out to ten years of licensure.

September Topic: Building Systems – Fundamentals, strategies, and tips for the mechanical and electrical plan vignette.  Presentation of the principles, materials, and technologies of plumbing, HVAC, electrical and lighting systems within buildings.  Particular emphasis will be stressed on design implications and collaboration between disciplines.

Tuesday, Nov. 15 7:00am-12:00pm at the Pomaikai Ballroom, Dole Cannery Square.  "Still Houseless in Honolulu - Increasing the Supply of Housing at All Price Point"  At the first “Houseless in Honolulu” summit in 2015, BIA-Hawaii identified some of the challenges we face as a community with the limited supply of housing at all price points. Schools, universities, and hospitals, etc. would be challenged to recruit and retain professionals that serve our communities to live and work in Hawaii. Since then, the median price of a home on Oahu reached $760,000 in June 2016. View Event Flyer.

DOL Overtime Rules Take Effect Dec.1

Unsure of how the new Department of Labor overtime rules will affect you or or your firm? AIA has published a number of reviews to assist you as you plan for the December 1 effective date.

Remember, planning is key and December 1 will be here soon. Determine how exactly the rule will affect your firm, based on its size, location and other factors. In addition, you will need to consider how other businesses with which you subcontract with may be impacted by new labor costs so that any changes may be incorporated into your business projections.

Paper Architecture Night + Annual Pumpkin Esquisse & Costume Contest Oct. 28

Halloween is right around the corner! AIAS Hawai‘i is very excited to invite you to Paper Architecture Night (PAN) and the annual Pumpkin Esquisse at the School of Architecture Courtyard at 6pm. Come in costume and enter our costume contest! 

The theme for this PAN is Mastering Graphics, and they will be featuring presenters Neil Chan, Karla Sierralta, Joelyn Dalit and Amanda Garcia.  This PAN Night Series is also featuring DJ Skysushi.

  • Nov 7-9: Hawaii SFPE Seminar Presentation - 2016 NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm Code
    The Hawaii Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers are sponsoring this three-day seminar through a special arrangement with the National Fire Protection Association. It will take place on Nov. 7-9 from 8am-5pm each day at the Hale Ikena, Fort Shafter Golf Clubhouse. The cost is $1295 per person.
