AIA National & Industry Update
New Law Affecting Residences Signed by the Governor
On July 10, Governor Ige, signed H.B. 830 (224) into law, which amends chapter 6E-42 Hawaii Revised Statues (HRS). Effective July 1, 2015, applications for a proposed project requiring a County permit on an existing privately-owned, single-family detached dwelling unit or townhouse will only be subject to State Historic Preservation Division (SHPD) review under Chapter 6E-42 HRS if the single family, detached dwelling unit or townhouse is:
- Listed on the Hawaii and or national register of historic places; or
- Nominated for inclusion on the Hawaii and or national register of historic places; or
- Located in a historic district
Act 224 exempts all other projects for renovations or improvements to privatley-oned, single-family detached dwelling unti or townhouse that requires a County permit from SHPD review. Read the entire letter with more information. In order to better assist the review process, SHPD has posted a list of all privately-owned, single-family detached dwelling units or townhouses listed in the Hawaii or National registers of historic places on the SHPD website.
