AIA Issues Response to State Of The Union Address
The AIA has issued a response to President Barack Obama’s final State of the Union address on January 12.
Reacting to the design industry issues prompted by the address, including climate change, the economy, and student debt, recently inaugurated AIA President Russell Davidson, FAIA, urged for the President and Congress to work together to safeguard the health of the design and construction sector.
The AIA statement stressed the need to reduce the environmental impact of the construction industry by developing long-term solutions to ensure energy efficiency and urged for the passing of the National Design Services Act, which would allow architecture school graduates to exchange community service for assistance with student debt. Strengthening the Historic Tax Credit to promote investment in historic preservation was also included in the AIA’s set of legislative priorities. Read the statement.

AIA Releases Home Design Trends Survey Findings
For the tenth anniversary of the AIA Home Design Trends Survey, a panel of more than 500 residential architects were asked what they thought would be the most significant home design elements over the next ten years.
“Historically, the dominant factors in home design have been economic and demographic shifts. Residential architects are seeing these forces at play in their vision for the next decade as well,” said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA, PhD. “Homeowners have indicated a strong preference for functionality, accessibility, and sustainability over the last ten years and architects expect that to accelerate, with increasing demand for healthy building materials and furnishings, along with designs that provide measures of resistance to weather related calamities.” Read the ConcstructionDive insight on the survey.
