    NCARB Launches ARE 5.0

The newest version of the exam required for an architecture license, ARE 5.0, launched on Nov. 1.

After four years of development, the latest version of the Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®), ARE 5.0, launched on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The updated exam incorporates new testing technologies and features six divisions that align with current practice and the progression of an architecture project. ARE 5.0 was developed with the help of practicing architects who volunteer their time and expertise, and reviewed by experts who ensure the exam is fair, reliable, and meets national testing standards.

Developed and administered by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), the ARE assesses the knowledge and skills of all candidates seeking a license to practice architecture in the United States. NCARB periodically updates the exam to ensure it continues to reflect the demands of professional practice.  Learn more.

The economy has limped through much of 2016. Some analysts say uncertainty over the U.S. presidential and congressional elections has caused businesses and consumers to hold off committing to construction and other spending. Once the election is finally over, will construction get a bounce or fall into a sinkhole? What are the likely impacts on housing, private nonresidential investment, infrastructure and other public projects? Will labor availability ease or continue to plague many contractors? Are materials prices heading up, down or sideways?

Hawaii Business "20 for the Next 20"

Deadline Nov 26: 20 for the Next 20 Nominations

Every year, Hawaii Business identifies 20 people whose talents, accomplishments and potential set them apart as emerging leaders of Hawaii over the next two decades. They call them 20 for the Next 20, Hawaii's People to Watch.  Past honorees have been described as energetic, innovative, entrepreneurial, talented, intelligent and charismatic leaders of tomorrow. These “People to Watch” may come from any field: business, public service, law, entrepreneurship, education, government service or elsewhere. Age is not a factor. However, elected politicians or people running for elective office will not be considered.

Which people do you think are worth considering?
Some things that will help them are:
    • Facts about the nominee, including name and key roles in the community;
    • Their accomplishments at work and elsewhere, and what makes them special;
    • Why you think they are destined for even greater things in Hawaii; and
    • Your association with the nominee and their contact info.

Click here to submit your nominations. The deadline for nominations is Nov. 26 and they will profile each of the 20 in our March issue.

2017 AIA Gold Medal Awarded to Paul Revere Williams, FAIA

The Board of Directors of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) announced Wednesday that they have voted to posthumously award the 2017 AIA Gold Medal to Paul Revere Williams, FAIA, whose portfolio of nearly 3,000 buildings during his five-decade career was marked with a number of broken barriers. The Gold Medal honors an individual whose significant body of work has had a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture. Williams’ legacy will be honored at the 2017 AIA National Convention in Orlando.

Williams, the first African-American architect to receive the AIA Gold Medal, was born in Los Angeles in 1894. He was orphaned by the age of four and was later raised by a foster mother who valued his education and encouraged his artistic development. Despite a high school teacher’s attempts to dissuade him from pursuing architecture for fear that he wouldn’t be able to pull clients from the predominantly white community while the black community would not sustain his practice, Williams persevered. Read more and view building images.

Members Receives Richard Upjohn Fellowship & Louise Blanchard Bethune Fellowship

On December 9, 2016, the AIA conferred the Richard Upjohn Fellowship to Danielle Mitchell, Assoc. AIA, and the Louise Blanchard Bethune Fellowship to Louis Fung, AIA for their service on the National Board of Directors and Strategic Council, respectively.

The Richard Upjohn Fellowship Medal is presented to those members who have served the profession on the National AIA Board of Directors. The Upjohn Fellowship is named after the man who founded the New York Society of Architects in 1857 which shorted thereafter, changed names to the American Institute of Architects. The initiation of the organization was to “promote the scientific and practical perfection of its members” and “elevate the standing of the profession.”

Reserved for retiring members of the Strategic Council, the inaugural Louise Blanchard Bethune Fellowship serves to recognize their service and signify their continued commitment to the mission of the AIA and Strategic Council. The Louise Blanchard Bethune Fellowship is named for the first American woman recognized as a professional architect and the first female to be elevated to Fellowship in the AIA. An architectural vanguard, Bethune ushered in a new future for the profession and society. She challenged the status quo of the profession and set new standards for architectural practice. Congratulations to both of them from AIA Honolulu!

Architecture Billings Index ekes out another small gain

Washington, DC – December 21, 2016 – Coming off a modest increase after two consecutive months of contraction, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) recorded another small increase in demand for design services.  As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lead time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the November ABI score was 50.6, essentially unchanged from the mark of 50.8 in the previous month. This score reflects a slight increase in design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings).  The new projects inquiry index was 59.5, up from a reading of 55.4 the previous month.

“Without many details of the policies proposed, it’s still too early to tell the likely impact of the programs of the new administration,” said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA, PhD. “However, architects will be among the first to see what new construction projects materialize and what current ones get delayed or cancelled, so the coming months should tell us a lot about the future direction of the construction market.”

          Key November ABI highlights:

          • Regional averages: South (51.3), Midwest (50.9), Northeast (50.8), West (48.6)
          • Sector index breakdown:  multi-family residential (51.7), mixed practice (51.3), commercial / industrial (50.4), institutional (49.5)
          • Project inquiries index: 59.5
          • Design contracts index: 50.2

The regional and sector categories are calculated as a 3-month moving average, whereas the national index, design contracts and inquiries are monthly numbers.

NCARB Releases Statement on "American Board of Architects"

In light of recent reports that the "American Board of Architects" (ABA) issued a statement claiming to "reform" state boards and "write new exams," Kristine Harding, AIA, President of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) issued the following statement this week with NCARB CEO, Michael Armstrong.

January 9, 2017: The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) has a membership composed of the 54 U.S. jurisdictional licensing boards. Each of these boards are created by statutory authority to oversee the licensure process and status regarding registered architects in their jurisdiction.

An announcement issued by the recently created “American Board of Architects (ABA)” claims that it is “writing new licensing exams and reforming state board [sic] of examiners to ensure qualified, unbiased public representation in law making bodies.” Only state and jurisdictional governments have the authority to form, or reform, their boards. Regarding examination, all U.S. jurisdictions use the Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®) as produced by NCARB; some jurisdictions overlay additional examination components.  Click here to read complete statement.

            AIA Honolulu Presidents Message

A Message from Chris Hong, 2017 AIA Honolulu President

In fall 2016, AIA Honolulu conducted two all-member surveys regarding the Honolulu Rail Transit Project. While participation in the survey was significant, what we learned is that our members are clearly divided on the issue.  Many survey respondents expressed their opinion that AIA Honolulu’s attention and focus should be directed at other issues that affect our local community or the industry as a whole.

As a professional membership organization, it is our responsibility to act on behalf of the majority, if not all, of our members when possible.  Therefore, the AIA Honolulu Board of Directors has voted not to make any additional statements regarding the Honolulu Trail Transit Project at this time.  We fully respect the rights of our members to pursue the issue as individuals or through groups outside of the AIA.

AIA Honolulu is working to proactively position our members to participate in key boards and commissions in Hawaii, to help regain a voice at the table as it relates to our built environment. We will continue to support local and national issues, on behalf of our membership, that affect our architectural community.

If you have any questions, please email Abby Spencer Mundell, AIA Honolulu EVP, or call at 808.628.7244.

            Sincerely,
            Chris Hong, AIA
            2017 President, AIA Honolulu

            AIA National Updates

AIA National Sets 2017 Federal Agenda

The American Institute of Architects recently announced its agenda for the new Administration and Congress, advocating programs and policies that create more livable and energy efficient communities with investments in buildings as key elements of the national infrastructure.

“The AIA will continue to advance architecture as a powerful catalyst that stimulates economic activity while enhancing the common good,” said AIA President Thomas Vonier, FAIA. “Congress and the Federal agencies must expand efforts to build sustainable communities, with fair and affordable housing for all Americans.”

Vonier cited the results of AIA’s recent survey of its membership, which takes place with each presidential and mid-term election. In that survey, AIA members called for:

            • Increased spending on infrastructure that includes public buildings.
            • Energy conservation goals and objectives for federal buildings. The AIA will continue to lead efforts to maintain Section 433 of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, which sets ambitious energy savings goals for federal buildings by 2030.
            • Fair tax reforms for businesses. The AIA supports simplifying the tax code while maintaining incentives that encourage historic preservation and energy efficiency. The AIA supports efforts to ease conditions for small businesses, which make up roughly 80 percent of all U.S. architecture firms.
            • Livable, healthier communities. The AIA supports policies that encourage transit-oriented development and walkable communities, which improve public health and combat the epidemic of diseases such as obesity and diabetes.

“Good design is vital in society,” Vonier said. “Our commitment to the power of design is unwavering,” he added. “We call on Congress and the White House to advance policies that foster inclusive, diverse, sustainable and prosperous communities.”

NCARB Update! Revised Certification Path for Architects without a Degree

Last week the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) announced the launch of phase one of its revised certification path for architects without a degree from a program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). The NCARB Certificate will facilitate reciprocal licensure among the 54 U.S. jurisdictions, according to the press release distributed by NCARB on Tuesday.  Through this alternative, architects licensed in a U.S. jurisdiction who hold an architecture-related degree can satisfy the Certificate’s education requirement by documenting two times the Architectural Experience Program’s™ (AXP™) requirements (7,480 hours). A separate certification option for U.S. architects without an architecture-related degree will launch in spring. Learn more!

These education alternatives replace a previous option known as the Broadly Experienced Architect (BEA) Program, which cost $5,000 plus transcript review fees. Additionally, these revised paths will lead to a shorter evaluation process, and will be offered at no additional charge to active NCARB Record holders. The changes were adopted by a vote of the NCARB membership in June 2016 at its Annual Business Meeting.

Where We Stand: AIA Statement on Immigration and Travel Restrictions

AIA publishes seven principles on immigration

WASHINGTON, D.C., February 20, 2017 - As discussion on immigration continues, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) today joins with many American businesses, industries and universities in calling for fair and impartial immigration policies, and in expressing deep concern about policies that restrict immigration from specific countries or regions based on overly broad factors, including religion.

“Beyond the essential considerations of fairness and equity, restrictions targeting specific areas of the world can have profoundly negative business impacts,” said AIA President Thomas Vonier, FAIA.  “Professional service exports are a key contributor to AIA member firms and their earnings. In fact, the entire international building development, design and construction sector relies heavily on reciprocal treatment and on the fair and ethical ability to travel, reside and work across national boundaries.”  Read more.

              Wed: 11am–2pm & 3pm-6pm     Fri: 8am-12pm & 3pm-6pm

Despite Hawaii’s geographical isolation and unique identity, we are all familiar with buildings in our community that might easily be found anywhere else in the world. This recurring dilemma of placeless-ness offers architects in Hawaii a valuable opportunity to explore how we can sustain our local identity while still recognizing that we remain part of the greater world.  A regional design approach to architecture strives to create meaningful, mutually beneficial relationships between people and place.  2 X 2 exhibits two projects each by two local architectural firms, Ferraro Choi and Urban Works. Both firms share the University of Hawaii as a client but with campus designs for very different locations.
