2017 AIA Grassroots Conference Update

Reported by Chris Hong, AIA, 2017 AIA Honolulu President:  This year about 900 AIA members gathered in Washington DC for the Grassroots conference, the annual gathering of leaders throughout the AIA to talk about advocacy and leadership development. View Facebook Images.

This year the contingent from Hawaii was able to meet with representatives from Senator Brian Schatz, Representatives Colleen Hanabusa and Tulsi Gabbard, and even with Senator Mazie Hirono herself. These were very engaging meetings where we got an insight into their perspective and were able to offer our concerns on national and local issues that affect our industry.

The plenary sessions were highlighted with speakers such as Peter Calthrope, Michael Berkowitz, Jean Carroon, Tom Dallessio, Jeff Speck, and even Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh. The focus of these talks were The New Urban Agenda, Habitat 3, and the evolution of the role we play as Architects.

We left the conference with lessons learned and follow-up items, both with our national representatives and with our AIA Regional board. Please stay tuned.

AIA National Updates

Disaster Assistance Handbook Available Now

The Third Edition of the Disaster Assistance Handbook, just released by the AIA is now available. Download the Disaster Assistance Handbook.

“Citizen architects” assist their communities through service on boards and commissions before and after a disaster to plan for hazardous events, ensure building codes are updated, and advise on responsible land use that will allow businesses and communities to assume operations more quickly after a disaster.

In a state of emergency, architects and engineers work together to determine the habitability of homes and businesses, preventing further harm and injury to unsuspecting residents.

AIA Comments On Proposed 2018 Federal Budget

Last Friday the AIA released the following statement after the Trump Administration submitted to Congress its Fiscal Year 2018 federal budget.

"This budget includes many cuts that will have severe long-term ramifications for our communities and economy. It does away with programs that foster a cleaner environment and strong neighborhoods and it eliminates programs with a proven track record of job creation in the design and construction industry.

We are concerned about a proposed 31 percent cut in the budget of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Within EPA alone, 50 programs and 3,200 positions would be eliminated. Future federal support for the National Endowment for the Arts, which provides grants to architecture programs and conferences sponsored by the AIA, is also being cut, said AIA President Tom Vonier, FAIA. Click here for the letter to Scott Pruitt.

ABI Rebounds in February

The Architecture Billings Index (ABI) returned to growth mode in February, after a weak showing in January. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lead time between architecture billings and construction spending. The AIA reported the February ABI score was 50.7, up from a score of 49.5 in the previous month. This score reflects a minor increase in design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index was 61.5, up from a reading of 60.0 the previous month, while the new design contracts index climbed from 52.1 to 54.7.

“The sluggish start to the year in architecture firm billings should give way to stronger design activity as the year progresses,” said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA, PhD. “New project inquiries have been very strong through the first two months of the year, and in February new design contracts at architecture firms posted their largest monthly gain in over two years.”

AIA Honolulu Member Update

Congrats Jason Takeuchi, Assoc AIA our New Region Associate Director

Congrats Jason Takeuchi, Assoc. AIA, 2017 AIA Honolulu Associate Director for getting elected Region Associate Director (RAD) for the AIA Northwest & Pacific Region (NWPR).  Jason will step in to complete the vacated term for the next 9 months, and then serve a full two-year term.

The RAD represents the entire constituency of Associate Members in the AIA Northwest & Pacific Region as a member of the National Associates Committee and Region’s Executive Board.  They work with their counterparts, the YARDs, AIAS Quad Directors, Architect Licensing Advisors, and AIA Regional Directors across their Regions. RADs are responsible for gathering information about issues facing Associates within their Regions and disseminating information about national/regional activities and resources for use at the local level.  Of equal importance, RADs serve as a vital link between Associates and the national organization and are the key to vertical communication, connecting Associate leaders at all levels of the Institute.”

Danielle Mitchell, Assoc. AIA Interviewed by AIA National about Intern Titling

Read "Intern no more: AIA supports two new titles for professionals pursuing licensure" by Steve Cimino, March 22, 2017 where AIA Honolulu's Associate AIA member Danielle Mitchell was interviewed on titling interns. Danielle was part of the working group who narrowed down the list to our two new titles. This article talks about AIA's Board of Directors decision to update the Institute's position statements to clarify the term "intern." The newly approved statement specifies that, while "intern" remains a supported title for students working in an architectural office while pursuing an architecture degree, it should not apply to those who have already earned a NAAB-accredited degree and are currently working for a firm while pursuing licensure. For those individuals, AIA strongly supports two titles: "architectural associate" and "design professional."

2015 International Energy Conservation Code Update

2015 International Energy Conservation Code Now Approved

Read full article by Star-Advertiser, March 31, 2017. Gov. David Ige has updated the state’s building codes and standards, requiring new construction to be more energy-efficient.

Ige signed on March 20 the new building code, which includes rules mandating hotels to have controls that turn off lights when occupants leave a room, and turn off cooling systems when doors are opened. Other rules include a requirement that new single-family homes have solar water-heating systems and ceiling fans in every bedroom.

The new rules, which were announced Thursday by clean-energy nonprofit Blue Planet Foundation, are set to go into effect for state buildings 10 days after being filed with the Office of Lieutenant Governor. The counties are required to put in place a version of the rules signed by Ige no later than two years after they were updated.

2015 International Energy Conservation Code

Press Release of 2015 International Energy Conservation Code

Press Release from Governor David Y. Ige on April 5, 2017.

Governor approves energy code that will significantly reduce energy use

Gov. David Ige has approved a Hawai‘i Administrative Rule that requires the use of the updated 2015 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) for the construction of state buildings. The updated code will reduce energy use by almost two-thirds and make a significant contribution toward achieving Hawai‘i’s clean-energy goals.

“It’s important that the state lead by example as we move toward a 100 percent clean energy future for Hawai‘i,” Ige said. “Improving the energy efficiency of our buildings will allow us to reduce Hawai‘i’s dependence on imported oil, while protecting our environment and strengthening our economy.”

The new energy code is the result of work done by the Hawai‘i Building Code Council to adopt the 2015 IECC with Hawai‘i-specific amendments. Buildings that were constructed to the 2015 code use about 30 percent less energy than those built under the 2006 code. Hawai‘i’s amendments reduce energy use by another three percent.

Gov. Ige’s signing of the new IECC will pave the way for the eventual adoption of the code by Hawai‘i’s counties, requiring that all new commercial and residential construction meet the code. The greatest energy savings in the residential sector will come from decreasing cooling loads, increasing comfort with natural ventilation, and eliminating electric water heating.

The payback period for homes built in Hawai‘i to the new code is estimated at 4.3 years, according to a study by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The first-year energy cost savings for homes built to the new code is $1,097 when compared to the 2006 IECC. Over 25 years, the savings would be $27,425. View the release.

Where We Stand: Climate Change

The American Institute of Architects asserts that architects play a vital role in combating climate change. Buildings are major producers of carbon, so climate change poses both obstacles and opportunities for the profession.

We accept these challenges, and we call on policymakers to join with us in this effort. Read more.

Architectural Billings Index Announced

As the first quarter of the year came to a close, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) continued to climb up. The ABI is an economic indicator of construction activity reflecting the approximate nine to twelve month lead time between architecture billings and construction spending. According to the AIA Economics & Market Research Group, the March ABI score was 54.3, up four points from February. This number reflects an increase in design services. This increase in the ABI is a favorable signifier in the busy season of spring.

“The first quarter started out on uneasy footing, but fortunately ended on an upswing entering the traditionally busy spring season,” said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA, PhD. Click here for detailed breakdown.

2017 COTE Top Ten Awards

The AIA, in conjunction with the Committee on the Environment (COTE), has selected this year’s winners of the Top Ten Awards. Established 21 years ago, the Top Ten Awards give recognition to projects that best embody the integration of great design and great performance. COTE has stringent criteria for submissions that include social, economic, and ecological values. The criterion used by COTE has substantially changed this year. Buildings submitted are now judged on their actual performance as opposed to expected performance. Past winners have also been invited to submit post-occupancy data and narratives to be recognized with a single COTE Top Ten Plus award each year. This new ‘Plus’ designation is given to projects that continue to show honorable performance data and post occupancy lessons.

The winners of the Top Ten Awards will be recognized at the AIA Conference on Architecture in Orlando this week. Click here to learn more about the award recipients.

AIA Announces Upjohn Research Initiative Projects

The Upjohn Research Initiative awards grants to projects that support applied research that advances the design and professional practice. This year, five projects have been selected to receive grants.  The lengths of the grants are 18 months and helps recipients to have their findings and outcomes published both electronically and in a nationally distributed publication. The grant totals $100,000 and will be distributed to the five projects. Research of this years selected recipients include, circadian potential, plastiglomerates, sensor enabled assemblies, and adaptive façade systems.

Submissions for the 2017 Upjohn Research Initiative will open once more this spring. Research themes include the value of design, professional practice, and methods of construction. Click here to find out more about the Upjohn Research Initiative.

AIA College of Fellows Awards 2017 Latrobe Prize to Northeastern University Researchers for ‘Future-Use Architecture’

Award will help fund the investigation and documentation of the tectonic and performative attributes that facilitate long-term use and persistent change of buildings.

The AIA College of Fellows selected a team of three faculty members from Northeastern University’s School of Architecture and Resilient Cities Laboratory to receive the 2017 Latrobe Prize for their study of “Future-Use Architecture”.   The Latrobe Prize is awarded biennially for a two-year program of research leading to significant advances in the architecture profession. The $100,000 award will enable the team to identify design attributes contributing to future adaptability, demonstrate future-use design strategies for buildings using words and graphics, and document and analyze architectural precedents that exemplify future-use design. AIA Business Meeting for 2017 Defines New Resolutions

AIA held its annual business meeting to talk on a variety of issues facing architects moving forward. Topics discussed included social, political, and humanitarian issues that will be at the foundations of AIA programming and its purpose moving forward. Four out of the five proposed resolutions were passed.

Resolution 17-1: Where Architects Stand: A Statement of Our Values, sponsored by the AIA Board of Directors, passed an adoption of the text in a statement released by AIA earlier this year. The resolution emphasizes the Institute's core values in areas of equity, human rights, architecture that strengthens communities, sustainability, climate awareness, and economic opportunity.

The remaining resolutions passed at the AIA Business meeting were in regards to Emeritus Membership requirements, prioritizing the international housing crisis, and specialty credentialing of architects. The fifth resolution that failed to pass called for a new investigation of the collapse of World Trade Center Building 7.

The AIA Releases the 2017 AIA Contract Documents

The AIA announced at A’17 Conference on Architecture, the release of the 2017 edition of the A201 family of documents. This release includes updated versions of the AIA’s flagship documents, developed for the design-bid-build delivery model. Working with architects, contractors, subcontractors and owners, the AIA Documents Committee updates this core set of documents every 10 years. This helps ensure that the AIA legal form and agreements reflect changes and trends in the industry, and that the AIA Contract Documents remain the Industry Standard.

The new 2017 documents are currently available through an unlimited license or as a single customizable document on ACD5, the online platform.  The documents are also available as single, non-editable documents on AIA Documents on Demand and as paper version through some AIA Chapters.  Click here for more information.

AIA National Convention Update

View Pictures on Facebook courtesy of Dwight Mitsunaga, FAIA;
Jennifer Harada-Okino, AIA; Julie Lam, Assoc. AIA and AIA National.

AIA National Convention Update by our 2017 President Chris Hong, AIA

By Chris Hong, AIA: "Orlando 2017, another gathering of architects, this time in a city sprawled across a manufactured landscape. The theme of this year’s conference was “Anticipating Change” and the conference itself was kicked off with many great keynote speakers including Alejandro Aravena, Elizabeth Diller, Francis Kéré, Hon. FAIA, and Michael Murphy.

Some things were the same, the Expo floor was filled with many great exhibitors showing off their latest and greatest, seminars which showcase good examples of how other people are tackling similar challenges, and great networking within our regional representative and national. The tours offered an interesting look in and around Orlando, I personally went on a tour of Calatrava’s new building for Florida Polytechnic University. This gem of a building sits in the middle of an open field surrounded by man made lakes. The building itself displays great creativity and craftmanship but one has to wonder about the purpose of all the urban sprawl.

The highlight of the week was to honor our good friend Dwight Mitsunaga as he received his elevation to the College of Fellows. This honor is long overdue and we all send our congratulations to him. The convocation dinner was a great event and I was honored to be a part of his celebration. Congratulations again Dwight."

AIA Honolulu Member Dwight Mitsunaga Elevated To Fellowship

During the National AIA Convention in Orlando, AIA Honolulu celebrated one of our members being elevated to the AIA's College of Fellows.

Congratulations again to
Dwight Mitsunaga, FAIA!

The Fellowship program was developed to elevate architects who have made a significant contribution to architecture and society and who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession. Elevation to fellowship not only recognizes the achievements of architects as individuals, but also their significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level.

Report by Shaun Roth, AIA, Hawaii State Council Representative

"I was honored to represent AIA Hawaii State Council and AIA Maui as proxy at the AIA Conference on Architecture 2017 in Orlando, Florida.

Wednesday included the Northwest & Pacific Region board meeting and caucus. At the AIA Business Meeting we listened to candidate speeches and voted on bylaw amendments and resolutions, followed by casting our votes.  View report to AIA Hawaii State Council.

AIA put together an impressive line-up of tours. The three that I participated in were exceptional; a personal visit to several Nils Schweizer designed homes in old tree lined neighborhoods, the new Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, and a nature tour at the Canaveral National Seashore. The convention center in Orlando sprawls over 161 acres, so everyone was getting more than their 10,000 steps in every day.  The line-up of speakers was impressive and inspirational.  The meeting rooms were like ice chests. Luckily I remembered to bring shoes and long pants.

See you for A’18 in New York June 21-23!"
Shaun Roth, AIA, Hawaii State Council

Julie Lam, Assoc. AIA Received Annual Equity by Design Hackathon Scholarship

By Julie Lam, Assoc. AIA: "Receiving the annual Equity by Design Hackathon scholarship provided me with the opportunity to travel to Orlando for our AIA Convention.

During the Hackathon and throughout each of the keynote sessions (Michelle Obama, Amy Cuddy, and others), I learned about the core issues that affected our industry and the need for strong leaders to step up and advocate for change.  The need to diversify and engage our resources to help women, minorities, and the underrepresented in AIA is no longer an option but a must for our field to sustain and grow in value."

AIA Honolulu had another amazing Architecture Month in April with lots of fun and educational events being offer to members and the public by AIA Honolulu and sister organizations.

Next up was our very popular Architectural Firm Crawl in Downtown Honolulu with 13 participating firm's opening up the doors to +150 "crawlers". View images on Facebook.

Our popular Walking Tour was being held at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, for the first time, and was a great success with over 40 volunteers and 200 walkers who joined us for a fun day.

This year we offered two photography courses by photographers and members Jim Doyle and T.E. Garduque, FAIA. Combined over 30 people attended these amazing courses.  For our Film Night we watched the documentary "Coast Modern" that was followed by an interesting round table discussion with over 60 people attending.

Congratulations to our very own Ben Lee, FAIA who got to take part of this amazing project and the"Rio Salado 50th Reunion ASU"!

Click HERE to find out more about "The Rio Salado, Tempe Town Lake, Arizona State University College of Architecture, Class of 1967-2017, 50 years". View pictures on Facebook.

In the fall of 1966, the fifth year design students of the College of Architecture at Arizona State University led by Professor Robert McConnell accepted the challenge of converting the Salt River from a dry river be to a major asset for the region. The resulting Rio Salado Project was an innovative Master Plan that envisioned an inland seaport in the desert with a navigable waterway to the Gulf of California. The project would also transform a part of the empty Salt River into an urban green belt and civic amenity. In 1999 Tempe Town Lake opened and has become a major contribution to Arizona’s development and history. View the Rio Salado Story Flyer.

That accord, signed in late 2015 within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), commits the international community to fighting harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

Please attribute to AIA President Thomas Vonier, FAIA:   "The United States must remain a leader in the battle to cease harmful and needless practices that damage the planet and its climate, acting out of both environmental concerns and national economic interests. Instead of helping our economy, as the Administration contends, withdrawing from the Paris Agreement will put us behind our major global competitors." Click here for full press release.

Is Getting an Architecture License Worth It?

This question was debated in a great article titled "Setting up emerging professionals for licensure and success" published in AIArchitect by Korey White, AIA on June 30, 2017. Click here for the full article.

Our 2017 Associate Director, Jason Takeuchi, Assoc. AIA with Ferraro Choi And Associates was quoted in the article:

"This discrepancy seems to come down to a communication issue between firm leadership and emerging professionals. Jason Takeuchi, Assoc. AIA, of Ferraro Choi in Hawaii believes that the current generation of leaders has “viewed licensure as valued and necessary,” whereas the newer generation of emerging professionals doesn’t always see it as a critical step in their careers. Like many, Choi’s firm has encouraged licensure as a means to get to work on desirable projects, and as a tool to become exposed to the business of architecture."

    Hawaii Legislative Updates

AIA Hawaii State Council Legislative Report

By Dan Chun, AIAHSC Government Affairs Commission.
For full text of the bills go to www.capitol.hawaii.gov

AIA Hawaii State Council 's top priority is having state funds released to update our aged building code based on IBC 2006 - published eleven years ago. Two bills have passed. AIAHSC prefers HB1436.

In many past years the legislature funded update efforts only to have the governor decline to release the appropriations. Governor Ige has a bad record as his predecessors, demonstrating his lack of support for state building codes.
