In Remembrance
Aloha Hans Riecke, FAIA ME, AIA Maui
Hans was born in Muenster, Germany and yearned to see America. In the aftermath of World War II, he and his family lost their home, becoming refugees. He studied architecture at UC Berkeley, worked as a draftsman in Venezuela then returned to U.S.via Syracuse, New York with his wife Eli in 1955. They moved first to California and then to Maui in 1969.
His great passion for designing, planning and building innovative structures continued strong throughout his life. He was a strong supporter of AIA Maui and also involved with restoration of historic buildings, and other nonprofit groups. He was adventurous and like to sail, surf, fly planes and gliders and bicycled up the slopes of Haleakala. After retiring in 2001 he began painting and always had a few projects on deck. He was motivated, worked hard, and lived a modest life, always near the people he loved.
A life celebration was held on August 26 in Kahului. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends.

AIA National Updates
Hurricane Harvey: Updates from AIA's Disaster Assistance Program
Hurricane Harvey made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane and remains a danger to Texas and southwest Louisiana due to significant rainfall, flooding and wind.
How to help those affected by Harvey? At this time, Texas is still in the midst of an evolving hazard event. AIA is coordinating with local components, agencies and other building industry organizations on response efforts. Once flood waters have receded, SAP or ATC-trained Texas architects may be called upon by the state or local jurisdictions to perform rapid or safety assessments of homes and buildings. Please check back here for more information on volunteer opportunities.

Hawaii is home to the most isolated metropolis in the world, Honolulu, and, just like any other community, we depend on our neighbors, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and Hawaii for social, economic, and cultural support. Isolation, and the conditions associated with it, breeds a unique set of circumstances across our island chain. Public, private, nonprofit, activist, neighbor island and volunteer groups must continue to work together. Developing stronger partnerships with our neighbors is paramount to the success of the Hawaiian Islands.
