Hawaii is home to the most isolated metropolis in the world, Honolulu, and, just like any other community, we depend on our neighbors, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and Hawaii for social, economic, and cultural support. Update from AIA SpeakUp 2017 Denver, Colorado

Read full report by Brent I. Tokita, AIA, LEED AP.

Governmental Advocacy should be a high priority for any AIA chapter and you can’t get any higher than the 2nd Annual AIA SpeakUp in Denver, Colorado.  AIA Hawaii State Council provided a generous scholarship for me to attend this event which provided seminars and an interesting group exercise to promote advocacy skills through the grassroots of AIA.  There was representation from across the country with local chapters ranging from a few dozen to thousands of members.  Many were very inexperienced in advocacy whereas other had well-developed Political Action Committees(PACS) and targeted action plans.

    In Remembrance

Aloha Mr. Frank Haines, FAIA ME

It is with sad hearts we inform you that longtime AIA Honolulu member and past president, Frank Haines, FAIA ME, age 96, passed away on Thursday, August 10, 2017.

Mr. Haines was born in Bethlehem, PA and raised in Stanford, CT. He studied architecture at Princeton University, served in the Navy during WWII, and finished his schooling with a master's degree in architecture from MIT upon his return.

He was first introduced to Hawaii through the military but was invited back by Cyril "Cy" Lemmon, founder of Architects Hawaii (AHL), to work for him at Lemmon Architect, which got started out of his garage. Mr. Haines career in Hawaii architecture spanned six decades and he was one of the founders of modern architecture in the State. He became the president, and later chairman, of AHL, a professor at the UH Manoa School of Architecture, and the author of two books on Hawaii architecture.

Mr. Haines was an active member of AIA Honolulu since 1953 and in 1960 he became the Chapter president.  Due to his interest of historic buildings he co-founded our popular Saturday walking tour over 56 years ago, and still led them at a fast clip, up until his death. In 2015 the Historic Hawai‘i Foundations gave Mr. Haines the prestigious Preservation Commendation Award for this walking tour.

It was a true honor to have met and known Mr. Haines and he will be missed dearly by our AIA Honolulu members. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Mr. Haines is survived by two of his three children. His wife and a daughter preceded him in death. Services are pending, and we will notify you when more information is available.

    In Remembrance

Aloha Hans Riecke, FAIA ME, AIA Maui

Hans was born in Muenster, Germany and yearned to see America. In the aftermath of World War II, he and his family lost their home, becoming refugees. He studied architecture at UC Berkeley, worked as a draftsman in Venezuela then returned to U.S.via Syracuse, New York with his wife Eli in 1955. They moved first to California and then to Maui in 1969.

His great passion for designing, planning and building innovative structures continued strong throughout his life. He was a strong supporter of AIA Maui and also involved with restoration of historic buildings, and other nonprofit groups. He was adventurous and like to sail, surf, fly planes and gliders and bicycled up the slopes of Haleakala. After retiring in 2001 he began painting and always had a few projects on deck. He was motivated, worked hard, and lived a modest life, always near the people he loved.

A life celebration was held on August 26 in Kahului. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends.

How to help those affected by Harvey?  At this time, Texas is still in the midst of an evolving hazard event.  AIA is coordinating with local components, agencies and other building industry organizations on response efforts.  Once flood waters have receded, SAP or ATC-trained Texas architects may be called upon by the state or local jurisdictions to perform rapid or safety assessments of homes and buildings.  Please check back here for more information on volunteer opportunities.

Hurricane Harvey Update: AIA Houston Needs Our Help

Click Here for GoFundMe! Help Rebuild Architecture Center Houston

Hurricane Harvey delivered more than 4' of water and almost total devastation to the new space under construction for Architecture Center Houston in the historic 1906 B.A. Riesner building in downtown Houston.  The space was within 3 weeks of completion when the storm hit and flood mitigation designed specifically for this type of event was not yet fully installed.  Typical building insurance does not cover flood damage.  The risk policy carried by the contractor will cover some of the costs, but has a $100,000 deductible.  Architecture Center Houston could use your help.

    Canstruction® Winners & People's Choice Award

    12th Annual Canstruction® Competition = CANtastic!

Our 12th Annual Canstruction® competition was an amazing event with 11 teams of talented local architects, engineers and allied design professionals “canstructed” giant structures made entirely of thousands of cans of food.  They worked hard for 6 hours creating a variety of can-structions based on this year's theme “Browse a Library of CANstructures!.”  View Build Day Images on Facebook!

A Kids Can Corner structure was also created with the assistance of hundreds of island keiki who brought at least five cans of food as a donation to the Hawaii Foodbank. Scores of kids helped to build Rapunzel and her tower – from the Grimm Brothers’ classic – in this keiki building zone.

Mahao to our 2017 Canstruction® judges: Geoffrey Lewis, AIA, incoming 2018 AIA Honolulu president; Joleen Oshiro, food editor, Honolulu Star-Advertiser; and Schad Woods, 2017-18 president, Construction Specifications Institute, Honolulu Chapter.

After a blind judging, architects and Canstruction® co-chairs Reid Mizue, AIA; Elyse Takashige, AIA; Leigh Ishida, AIA; and Kristin Nakagawa, AIA announced the below honors:

    AIA National Update

Tax Reform - Get Ready to Mobilize

Last week, congressional leaders unveiled the Tax Credits and Jobs Act (H.R. 1) to rewrite our nation’s tax code. Based on AIA's preliminary assessment of the proposal, this bill could do real damage to thousands of architecture firms and would eliminate incentives for good design.

The bill excludes professional services such as architecture firms from the same lower small business tax rates as other industries, essentially forcing them to pay higher taxes than other business types. The proposal also eliminates a significant number of deductions, credits, and other incentives like the Historic Tax Credit and the tax deduction for energy efficient commercial buildings (179D).

The combination of higher taxes on design firms and fewer incentives for good design could be devastating to architects and the communities they serve. It is imperative that you make your voice heard – please tell your representatives how these changes will affect you and your business.

Congressional leaders say they hope to pass this tax reform package by the end of the year. That’s why we are mobilizing now.  Over the coming weeks, AIA will continue meeting with legislators in Washington, D.C. and engaging AIA members across the country as this proposal makes its way through the legislative process. Click here to read statement issued by AIA President Tom Vonier, FAIA.

How can you help?  Join the AIA Legislative Action Network (LAN) and receive in-depth, up to date information on this and other key issues. You’ll be invited to briefings and trainings that strengthen your advocacy activities and ensure you’re the first to know how federal legislation affects you. You also can make your voice heard now by sending a letter to your members of Congress to urge them to protect the tax provisions that affect you the most: Green Building Incentives, Historic Tax Credit or S Corps.

STAY ALERT – this bill may move fast, and if it does, we will need to mobilize quickly.  If you see an AIA Action Alert in your inbox, don’t delete it: Read it and ACT. It may be our only opportunity to weigh in with Congress.  Together, we can speak up for our shared values as architects and make sure that we are at the table when Congress makes big decisions that affect us.

Statewide Research on Key Provisions of Architecture Practice Acts & Regulation

Earlier this fall the AIA contracted with Stateside Associates to conduct a research project on key provisions of state architecture practice acts and regulations to be used as a reference document by state AIA components. The attached Stateside Research Project on Key Provisions of Architecture Practice Acts and Regulations specifically addresses questions pertaining to some of the basic elements of state law on pre-licensure titling and reciprocity requirements in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia. AIA has been coordinating with NCARB and will continue to do so moving forward.  Click here for Statewide Research on Key Provisions of Architecture Practice Acts & Regulation PDF.

This document is a fluid one so please let AIA know wherever changes may seem advisable. They welcome our assistance in keeping the document as accurate and up-to-date as possible. Send edits to annelaw@aia.org.

    Architecture Billings Bounce Back

After a stand-alone month of contracting demand for design services, there was a modest uptick in the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) for October. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve-month lead time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the October ABI score was 51.7, up from a score of 49.1 in the previous month. This score reflects an increase in design services provided by U.S. architecture firms (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index was 60.2, up from a reading of 59.0 the previous month, while the new design contracts index eased slightly from 52.9 to 52.8.

“As we enter the fourth quarter, there is enough design activity occurring that construction conditions should remain healthy moving through 2018,” said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA, PhD. “Extended strength in inquiries and new design contracts, along with balanced growth across the major building sectors signals further gains throughout the construction industry.”  Read more >

ARE 5.0 Celebrates One Year Anniversary with Division Giveaway

This month, the Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®) 5.0 turns one, and is celebrating by giving away free ARE 5.0 divisions!

If you transition from ARE 4.0 to ARE 5.0 anytime before November 30, 2017, you could be one of the 24 winners we’ll be selecting this month. Learn More >

The new version of the exam features six divisions that align to current architectural practice and the updated Architectural Experience Program™ (AXP™), making it easier for candidates to connect test topics to real-world experience. It also does away with vignettes and adds a few new item types.

With the June 30, 2018, retirement of ARE 4.0 fast approaching, candidates should make a plan to finish the exam—whether that means completing the exam in 4.0 or transitioning in 5.0.
