Architectural Hiring and the Economy

Are there enough architects to meet the needs of profession in its current state?

The article “How Many Architects Does Our Economy Need?,” published in Architect Magazine, addresses the staffing challenges architects face in a changing economy. In evaluating the relationship between construction activity and architectural positions, it concludes that the gap between existing architectural staff and the number required to handle current workloads is at a historic low. The findings also show that architectural staff will have to grow by 25,000 to handle the growth in the construction industry and replace those who have left the workforce.

A Recap of the Case for the BArch in Hawaii with Daniel Friedman, FAIA

On Thursday, April 19th, over fifty members of the design community came together for a discussion led by Dean Daniel Friedman, FAIA to learn about the positive impact an accredited Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Hawaii would have on our community.

After the successful results of the NAAB accreditation visit at the UH SoA were presented to attendees, lots of dialogue on the BArch took place, ultimately concluding in widespread support of the BArch among attendees.

Following this discussion, AIA members, students, faculty and allied professions are encouraged to continue the momentum of the conversation.

Please email Brent Tokita, AIA, Hawaii State Council President-Elect for more information.

“What makes good design, great architecture?” Is a presumptive question to ask. Good Design can make our human-created world better. It can make it better in a social and an environmental sense. Architecture should be neither weird nor boring, neither alien nor alienating, neither wasteful nor wanting in the qualities that make us human. It should be good!  Come listen to Andrew Tang; Deirdre Stearns, AIA and Bundit Kanisthakhon talk about.....

1) The "foundation" of their early years which may have contributed to their process in design of good buildings.
2) Education and exposure to "Architect Heros" and how that influenced their practice.
3) Principals, ideas, and elements which influence their designs such as the client, budget, program etc.
4) Experience working abroad and how that influenced their approach towards design.

Architecture Firm Billings Strengthen

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is reporting that architecture firm billings rose for the seventh consecutive month, with the pace of growth in April increasing modestly from March.

Overall, the AIA’s Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score for April was 52.0 (any score over 50 is billings growth), which indicates the business environment continues to be healthy for architecture firms despite continued labor shortages, growing inflation in building materials costs and rising interest rates. The ABI also revealed that business conditions remained strong at firms located in the West, while billings softened slightly at Midwest firms.  Read More.

Number of U.S. Architects on the Rise

Every year, NCARB requests the number of architects and reciprocal licenses from each of its jurisdictions—which include all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The 2017 Survey of Architectural Registration Boards indicates architects in the United States rose to 113,554, a three percent increase since 2016. Compared to the population, there is one architect for every 2,900 people in the United States.

The number of architects has risen over 10 percent since 2008, while the total U.S. population has risen 8 percent, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Read more.

AIA Launches Film Challenge

WASHINGTON – June 18, 2018 – The AIA has launched its fourth annual film challenge as part of the AIA’s “Blueprint for Better” campaign, an initiative that highlights the collaborative work of architects and civic leaders to solve some of the biggest issues facing cities today.

AIA is launching its film challenge along with the premiere of its new film, “Caño Martin Peña: A Blueprint for Better,” which depicts the rebuilding efforts of an architect and community leader in Puerto Rico following last year’s devastating Hurricane Maria that left more than three million people without power. AIA will debut the film at the AIA Conference on Architecture 2018 this Thursday.

Similar to AIA’s film, participants in the film challenge should produce, shoot and edit a three to five-minute documentary to tell a story about architects working with civic and community leaders to make a positive impact on their cities and towns.  Submissions for the film challenge—due by 11:59 p.m. PDT on Monday, Aug. 27.

Complete details are available on AIA’s Film Challenge website. Films from previous film challenge finalists can be watched online.

AIA National Updates

2018 AIA Conference on Architecture in New York City

About 60 members from AIA Honolulu and the rest of the nation made their way to New York City last week to learn, network and further their professional development at the 2018 AIA Conference on Architecture. In addition to conference events, representatives from AIA Honolulu attended the annual business meeting where they heard from candidates for AIA National office and voted on bylaws and resolutions.

A bylaws amendment allowing for members to apply for emeritus status if they have at least 25 years of membership but do not meet the 15 consecutive years of membership passed.

After much passionate debate and a business meeting that extended well beyond its allotted time, several resolutions calling for studies on emerging professionals, representation of minority women in leadership roles in AIA and the structure of AIA’s regions passed.  Click HERE for more information on adopted bylaws amendments and resolutions.

NCARB Releases New Report On Diversity in Architecture

The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) has released new data outlining the current state of diversity within the field of architecture. The results indicate that while diversity among licensure candidates is improving, the rate at which non-white individuals are abandoning their pursuit of licensure remains high. In addition, gender equity remained largely unchanged over the past year, though women are still underrepresented in the field. Click HERE to see the full details of the report.

Architecture Firm Billings Strengthen

Architecture firm billings grew in May, marking the eighth consecutive month of solid growth, according to a new report today from The American Institute of Architects (AIA).

Overall, the AIA’s Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score for May was 52.8 (any score over 50 is billings growth), which shows that demand for services from architecture firms continues to be healthy. The ABI also indicated that business conditions remain strong at firms located in the South and West, while growth in billings was modest at firms in the Northeast and Midwest. In case you missed it! Land Use Ordinance (LUO) Task Force Report to the DPP

Last week we sent a flash where you could view the report produced by the AIA Honolulu LUO Task Force documenting their efforts and summarizing their recommendations to the City and to the consultant team responsible for guiding this process forward.  Email comments or questions to Tom Rudary, AIA or Deirdre Stearns, AIA.

One piece of the report still in need of attention is the section discussing LUO Article 9, Special District Regulations. The Task Force plans to hold a follow-up meeting (tentatively scheduled for mid- to late-July), but needs insight from AIA members who have done work in one or more of Honolulu’s designated special districts and have recommended changes to Article 9 based on their experience.

AIA Conference Update

2018 AIA Conference on Architecture in New York City

By Louis Fung, AIA, President, AIA Hawaii State Council

Amazing, exhilarating and overwhelming are the most common remarks that I gathered from people at the AIA Convention in New York City, June 20 - 23.  The shear amount of people attending, workshops, tours, events and sight-seeing opportunities is simply unprecedented. Hawaii marked an impressive presence with more than 60 members at the Big Apple. This year’s events were organized so that participants would have opportunities to explore various key places in the city, such as the Radio City Music Hall, the New School, etc. View images on Facebook.

At the Northwest and Pacific Region business meeting, Geoffrey Lewis, President of AIA Honolulu, made an excellent presentation for the November Region Symposium in Honolulu. Although the AIA Annual Business Meeting went quite a bit over time, many great resolutions were passed as benefits for our nearly 100,000 members.

Most who frequently attend the AIA convention enjoy moments to connect with old friends, classmates and AIA leaders, aside from the vast selection of workshops and tours. As people often say, "we come to the meetings and stay for the people."

As I conclude this brief report of the A’18 Convention, I also conclude my term as President of AIA Hawaii. It’s been a great honor to have served AIA and to have met and worked with so many great people. See you all again in Vegas!

MAHALO Louis Fung, AIA from AIA Honolulu for your incredible work on the AIA Hawaii State Council!

AIA National Update

June Architectural Firm Billings Stay Positive

Architecture firm billings slowed in June but remained positive for the ninth consecutive month, according to a new report today from The American Institute of Architects (AIA).

AIA’s Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score for June was 51.3 compared to 52.8 in May, which is positive since any score over 50 represents billings growth. As a result, June’s ABI shows that demand for architecture firm services continues to improve across all sectors.

The Architecture Billings Index (ABI), produced by the AIA Economics & Market Research Group, is a leading economic indicator that provides an approximately nine to twelve month glimpse into the future of nonresidential construction spending activity. Read more.

AIA Makes Statement Against EPA Proposed Pro-Asbestos Rule Change

Earlier this summer, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a proposal that could lead to increased use of asbestos in the construction of buildings and other products.

AIA submitted formal comments to the EPA in opposition to its proposed Significant New Use Rule, which would allow for new asbestos products to be considered for future manufacturing, processing and importing.

AIA 2018 President Carl Elefante, FAIA, issued the following statement in response to the EPA’s proposal:
“The AIA strongly opposes the EPA’s proposed rule. Asbestos can cause significant and irreversible risks—including cancer, mesothelioma and other diseases—to those who come into direct contact with friable and airborne asbestos fibers. This is especially concerning for contractors, builders, architects and homeowners who could be exposed to dislodged asbestos fibers during the demolition and building process if they are unaware of its presence. The EPA has offered no compelling reason for considering new products using asbestos, especially when the consequences are well known and have tragically affected the lives of so many people. The EPA should be doing everything possible to curtail asbestos in the United States and beyond—not providing new pathways that expose the public to its dangers.”  Read the AIA’s submitted comments to the EPA here.

Click HERE for a letter circulating which firm owners can sign, asking the EPA to rescind its pro-asbestos plan:

Projections Reveal Nonresidential Construction Spending to Grow

Construction spending is projected to grow through 2019, according to a new consensus forecast from The American Institute of Architects (AIA).

Spending on nonresidential buildings nationally increased only modestly last year, barely outpacing inflation in building costs. Halfway through the seventh year of continuous growth for the cyclical construction industry, 2018 might have looked to be the year that the industry would enter another recession. However, when polled at the beginning of this year, the AIA Consensus Construction Forecast Panel—consisting of leading economic forecasters— instead saw an acceleration in activity, projecting 4.0 percent growth in 2018 and a nearly equal 3.9 percent in 2019.

The AIA Consensus Construction Forecast panel is comprised of Dodge Data & Analytics, Wells Fargo Securities, LLC, IHS Economics, Moody’s Economy.com, ConstructConnect, Associated Builders & Contractors, and FMI. The forecast has been conducted for 18 years. Read more.

July Architecture Firm Billings Remain Positive Despite Growth Slowing

Architecture firm billings growth slowed again in July but remained positive overall for the tenth consecutive month, according to a new report today from The American Institute of Architects (AIA).

AIA’s Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score for July was 50.7 compared to 51.3 in June. Any score over 50 represents billings growth. While July’s ABI shows that aggregate demand for architecture firm services continues to increase, much of that growth came from one region—the South.

“Billings at architecture firms in the South remained robust in July, offsetting declining billings in other regions of the country,” said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA, PhD. “Despite the dip in the overall ABI number in July, firms are still reporting a healthy increase in new projects.” Read More.

Expert school-design architect and former AIA president Russ Davidson, FAIA, testified last week in Las Vegas before the Federal Commission on School Safety (FCSS) to advocate for school design strategies and legislation that will support safer schools in the United States.

AIA launched legislative initiatives this month that outline the Institute’s commitment for improving school design policies, which includes a bipartisan effort on Capitol Hill focusing on two main goals. The first is to make architectural and design services for schools an allowable use of funds within existing federal grants. The second would establish a federal clearinghouse of resources on school design best practices for school officials, architects and other design professionals to keep them informed.

Architect Jay Brotman, AIA,—who designed the new Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut—echoed Davidson support for AIA’s initiatives when he testified before the FCSS on August 16.

In addition to the testimony of Davidson and Brotman, other AIA member architects—with an expertise in designing safer schools—are also taking part in advocating for safer schools. Read more.

A P3, or public-private partnership, is a procurement model that uses an integrated approach to deliver infrastructure, incorporating design, construction, financing, operations and maintenance functions into the contract.  P3s have been successful around the nation for several years and many government agencies and developers are considering it for their project.  Come hear Rodney Moss of AIAI give a webex about P3 projects being explored in Hawaii and see how many current projects already have many of the aspects of P3.  Learn what has been proposed in the last Legislative session and what’s to come in the upcoming legislative session.

Rodney Moss is Sr. Vice President of the Hunt Development Group. He has served AIAI for three years as the chair of the Law & Legislative committee and was instrumental in drafting the original P3 legislation in Texas and Florida. Rodney has 25 years experience in construction risk management and construction-related claims.  Rodney was a partner in the Procurement and Construction Practice Group of the law firm of Bradley Arant Boult & Cummings in Birmingham, Alabama before joining Balfour Beatty. AIA Adopts New Rules and Ethical Standards for Members

The American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) Board of Directors approved several changes to the AIA Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct to explicitly address sexual harassment, equity in the profession, and sustainability.

The Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct applies to all AIA members. The code's ethical standards are aspirational and define the tenets of ethical behavior for AIA members. The code also includes disciplinary rules, which are mandatory and enforceable. Violations of the rules may result in sanctions, including termination of membership.

“The architecture profession is at a threshold moment,” said AIA 2018 President Carl Elefante, FAIA. “The Board’s adoption of these changes provides us with another step toward ending sexual harassment in the workplace, advancing equity in our profession, and promulgating sustainable practices. I applaud the members who raised their voices to offer these improvements to the code, and the AIA delegates, Board of Directors, and National Ethics Council who acted on their concerns.”

The new rules and ethical standards resulted in part from resolutions presented and adopted by delegates at the annual meeting of the Institute in connection with the 2018 AIA Conference on Architecture. The AIA National Ethics Council, in consultation with the Board Committee on Equity and the Future of Architecture, made recommendations to the AIA Board of Directors, which it adopted. Read more.

AIAS Hawai’i, AIA Honolulu, the School of Architecture at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, and the University of Hawai’i Community Design Center are proud to announce the 2018 Building Voices Student Design Competition.

HONOLULU CONNECTS, being held in partnership with the City and County of Honolulu and the Mayor's Office, is open to any and all students who are in a design focused program and recent graduates that are within one year of their graduation in the United States and its territories.

The competition challenges competitors to design a series of discrete urban interventions that create a cohesive and continuous design district stretching from the Honolulu Museum of Art to the ocean at Kewalo Harbor.

The 2018 Building Voices Student Design Competition centers on three strategic sites surrounding Honolulu's historic Thomas Square. Proposed design interventions are intended to act as model design typologies for deployment throughout the entirety of the Culture + Performing Arts Corridor. Design solutions should be both unique to Hawai‘i and be able to serve as models for communities around the world.

August Architecture Firm Billings Rebound as Building Investment Spurt Continues

Architecture firm billings rebounded solidly in August, posting their eleventh consecutive month of growth, according to a report released today from The American Institute of Architects (AIA).  AIA’s Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score for August was 54.2 compared to 50.7 in July (any score over 50 represents billings growth). Most of the growth continues to come from the South and the multi-family residential sector.

“Billings at architecture firms in the South continue to lead the healthy increase in design activity that we’ve seen across the profession in recent months,” said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA, PhD. “Nationally, growth across all building sectors remains solidly positive."  Read More.

Pet Rooms Join Au Pair/In-Law Suites as Increasingly Popular Home Features

Results from AIA's second quarter Home Design Trends Survey shows homeowners are becoming increasingly interested in re-configuring spaces for their pets as well as for their in-laws and au pairs.

The latest survey results—focusing on home features—show architecture firms receiving a major bump in interest from clients in re-configuring both interior kennels and au pair/in-law suites as home spaces that can function as separate living quarters.

“Outdoor living areas and home offices remain popular special function rooms in a booming market,” notes AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, PhD. Hon. AIA. “But an increasing number of homeowners are also focusing on their pets and incorporating them into their housing designs.”

The AIA Home Design Trend Survey is conducted quarterly with a panel of more than 500 architecture firms that concentrate their practice in the residential sector. Read more.
