AIA Honolulu Event Update

AIA Honolulu Film Night - I.M. Pei: Building China Modern

There was a full house at the CFA on Thursday evening for the Film Committee's screening of "I.M. Pei:  Building China Modern"; a film chronicling Pei's design of the Suzhou Museum and the challenges of juxtaposing China's ancient culture and modern progress. View images on Facebook.

Special thanks to our panelists:  William Chapman (Interim Dean, UH-SOA), Tonia Moy, AIA (Fung Associates, Inc.) and Raymond Yeh (former Dean, UH-SOA) for their insightful responses and stories about Pei's career, modernist architecture in the context of their times, and Pei's only project in Hawaii:  the East-West Center.

In attendance were members of the Friends of the East-West Center (who sponsored this event) and special guest, Dr. Richard Vuylsteke, President of the East-West Center.

Of particular note, the panelists challenged the audience to find out more about local architect Clifford Young, of Young & Henderson, who was integral in working with Pei and getting the East-West Center built.

ABI Sees Decline in New Design Contracts

AIA released the latest Architecture Billings Index (ABI). In July, the design contracts score dipped into negative territory for the first time in almost a year. Additionally, July billings softened in all regions except the West, and at firms of all specializations except multifamily residential.

“The data is not the same as what we saw leading up to the last economic downturn but the continued, slowing across the board will undoubtedly impact architecture firms and the broader construction industry in the coming months,” said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, Ph.D., Hon. AIA.

“A growing number of architecture firms are reporting that the ongoing volatility in the trade situation, the stock market, and interest rates are causing some of their clients to proceed more cautiously on current projects.” Click here for the full AIA National press release.
